North Carolina Medical Board is currently seeking an Associate Medical Director to join their team in their Raleigh, NC location. About the Role: The Associate Medical Director, (AMD), is responsible for supporting the Chief Medical Officer and the OMD staff in reviewing and providing detailed written reports on a wide range of matters that involve quality of care, ethical, and professionalism concerns, and making recommendations to the Board regarding those matters. The Associate Medical Director, under the direction of the CMO, provides guidance and oversight of the Department's case review process and helps guide the Assistant Medical Director in this work. The AMD is available to support various Board projects and initiatives in consultation with the CMO and works collaboratively with the CMO in all matters related to the Department's work. What You'll Do: Comprehensively reviews and makes written recommendations regarding quality-of-care issues raised by professional liability insurance payment reports, complaints, change in staff privilege reports, investigations, medical examiner reports, and licensing issues. Assists the Board by reviewing, evaluating, and analyzing investigative and licensing information and providing detailed written recommendations to the Board regarding the related matters. Prepares reports and recommendations to relevant committees regarding matters under review. Attends committee meetings and provides assistance in the preparation of committee reports to the Board. Attends and assists the Board with licensing and investigational interviews. Collaborates with staff in the Legal and Investigative Departments regarding licensees who may be subject to summary suspension of licensure as an imminent threat to public health, safety, or welfare. Provides assistance and advice to the Board prosecuting attorneys as requested in preparation for contested case hearings before the Board. Provides assistance and advice to Board attorneys as requested in drafting public and private disciplinary and licensing documents. Provides information and policy input as requested by the Board. Proactively supports continuous quality improvement in the Board's process and workflow for enforcement cases in the investigative phase. Writes interim and private letters of concern on behalf of the Board. Acts under the supervision of the CMO and in collaboration with the Communications, Licensing and Legal Departments as a readily responsive and informed resource to other organizations and persons outside the Board for information about Board. Collaborates with the CMO and applicants who have been absent from active clinical practice for a significant period prior to making application for a license, and with the Board attorneys drafting Reentry Agreements with the aim of assuring safe reentry to practice by those applicants. With Board and CMO approval, the AMD participates in special projects consistent with the Board's mission. Assists in fulfilling Medical Board tasks and objectives as requested by CMO. Maintains full and unrestricted North Carolina physician licensure and participates in ongoing relevant professional growth and education (CME). Maintains strict confidentiality of all investigative and licensing information in the possession of the Board and always recognizes the difference between public and confidential/non-public information. Our Ideal Candidate: Education and Experience Medical (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) degree. Completion of accredited postgraduate training in a broadly based field of medicine. A minimum of 15 years recent clinical patient care experience, with a minimum of 5 years recent clinical patient care in North Carolina. Current ABMS or AOA. Full and unrestricted active NC license with no disciplinary action in any jurisdiction. Required Skills and Abilities Ability to acquire and maintain comprehensive knowledge of all laws, rules, regulations, and disciplinary actions applied regarding the practice of medicine in North Carolina, including those related to the regulation of private practice, hospitals, insurance companies, and familiarity with the various law enforcement agencies, medical schools, professional organizations, and other state health care regulatory and licensing Boards. Ability to maintain understanding of the investigative policies and procedures of the Medical Board. Ability to acquire and maintain a current broad body of knowledge of acceptable medical practices and of current drug and controlled substances prescribing principles including accepted dosages and uses. Ability to analyze complex information and to form and articulate to the Board and Board staff independent judgments from that information on a rational, consistent, ethical, and timely basis. Ability to provide technical recommendations, advice, and information based on medical experience and expertise. Proficiency with Microsoft office software. Proficient with online medical research. Effective interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interface with Board staff and the public at all levels. Self-directed and motivated with the ability to independently and proficiently complete time sensitive responsibilities, assignments, and projects within established guidelines.
