Join our community and experience Emerson College!The BFA Theatre Program and The Department of Performing Arts invite applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor of Theatre. Our ideal candidate will be a scholar-artist in Theater and Performance Studies who specializes in traditionally underrepresented areas, especially performance, histories, and dramatic literatures of the Global Majority, including Latinx/e, African Diaspora, Asian/Asian American, and Indigenous peoples and/or other artistic practices and traditions outside of the Western canon. We seek candidates who can contribute to the excellence and diversity of the academic community through ongoing engagement with students both inside and outside of the classroom. The department offers B.F.A. degrees in Theatre Design/Technology, Stage & Production Management, Musical Theatre, Acting, Theatre, Theatre & Performance, Theatre Education, and Theatre Education & Performance. Emerson Stage presents eight fully staged major productions annually in five theatres, with additional production opportunities available to our students through ArtsEmerson, our nationally and internationally-recognized professional presenting company. Emerson is also home to Howlround Theatre Commons. Emerson College enrolls over 5,800 graduate and undergraduate students from all 49 states and more than 70 countries. Its main campus is located in the dynamic, multicultural city of Boston. The college also has campuses in Los Angeles and the Netherlands. Primary Duties and Responsibilities: Teaching duties include, but are not limited to, introductory courses (such as Stages of Drama, Topics in Drama, Theatre, and Culture, Fundamentals of Directing, Principles of Dramaturgy) and upper-level courses specific to the candidate's area of expertise. In addition to teaching, responsibilities may include directing for Emerson Stage and will include advising and mentoring undergraduate majors, serving on program, departmental and college committees, sharing in the development of curriculum in the Performing Arts department, and advancing the academic and professional reputation of the institution. Qualifications: Candidates will hold an M.F.A. or Ph.D. in Theatre or Performance Studies with an active research and creative agenda illustrating exceptional promise or an established reputation, and willingness and ability to develop and teach innovative courses that encourage critical dialogue. The candidate should have experience teaching at the college or university level, with a demonstrated commitment to anti-racist practice and pedagogy and to social justice within both the classroom and the profession. We encourage applications from candidates who examine power relations and oppressive practices that are normalized in dominant culture and who explore race, gender, sexuality, and class dynamics through their work. Candidates must have a demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
