Our Purpose The Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) is a not-for-profit membership organization that promotes the health of women and newborns. Our mission is to empower and support nurses caring for women, newborns, and their families through research, education, and advocacy. Position Summary The Assistant Managing Editor (AME) provides editorial and management support to the Senior Director of Strategic Partnerships & Publications and publications staff regarding journals manuscript processing, peer review, copyediting, page proof corrections, production, publication, and dissemination of content in all media including social media. The AME also provides copywriting, copyediting, and proofreading support for AWHONN staff for organization documents and programs or services through cross-functional collaboration with marketing staff. The position also manages special projects as necessary. This position reports to the Senior Director of Strategic Partnerships & Publications. Duties and Responsibilities Content Management & Editing : Works independently across all publishing activities, including providing support for processing manuscripts, peer review, acquisition of copyrights and permissions, writing, copy editing, proofreading, and managing original content as needed from ideation to publication in support of the organization's goals. Responsibilities include the following: Assists publishing staff in editorial development projects for all organizational audiences, particularly nurses and consumers. Supports scholarly editorial, peer review, copy editing, and proofreading processes with strict adherence to publishing standards and schedules in collaboration primarily with publications staff and with organization staff in general. Supports the publications and staff in writing, copyediting, or proofreading content aligned with APA style and scholarly industry standards. Writes, edits, copyedits, and proofreads content for all media, including print, online, and digital media. Reviews edits or copyedits of others, including freelance consultants or contractors. Administers content management systems, including online manuscript submission and manuscript peer review and submission systems, and supports the senior managing editors regarding the progression of the editorial content within those systems. Supports the ongoing editorial development of partnerships- and publications-related communications campaigns, including social media and AWHONN Hub initiatives, and documents by copywriting, copyediting, and proofreading in collaboration with the Senior Director of Strategic Partnerships & Publications and related program managers. Supports the ongoing editorial development of major organizational documents and programs with copyediting and proofreading in collaboration with related program managers and in cross-functional collaboration with marketing staff. Partnerships & Publications-related Projects : In collaboration with the Senior Director of Strategic Partnerships & Publications and publications staff manages ongoing and new media and editorial projects in support of business development initiatives, including social media; online communities related to authors, readers, members, and other communities of interest, AWHONN Industry Members and other partners. Supports the dissemination and promotion of all journals and magazine content and partnerships content across social media and other digital platforms, including creating and maintaining social media content calendars, using templates to create visual abstracts for journal articles, and social media management for partnerships projects as needed. Editorial Administrative Support : Provides administrative and editorial support to Senior Director of Strategic Partnerships & Publications and publications staff related to ongoing partnerships and publications operations in concert with the departmental administrative assistant. Is cross-functionally trained in support of the work of the departmental administrative assistant. Assists the partnerships and publications staff, including senior managing editors and business development manager, in planning and managing editorial projects. Manages implementation, revision, and distribution of necessary style sheets and documentation of editorial and project management processes. Supports best practices to optimize copyediting and proofreading processes and implements APA as the preferred style of the organization and publications. Collaborates with the Senior Director of Strategic Partnerships & Publications on the dissemination of all partnerships and publications-related patient education and public awareness campaigns and initiatives in collaboration with the Director of Patient Education, including Go the Full 40, Every Change Matters, Healthy Mom&Baby Diaper Drive, and other campaigns and business development initiatives as commissioned. Completes administrative and project management tasks related to publications activities and editorial advisory boards, including routine administrative tasks as needed. Supports publications-related meetings, including editorial advisory board, convention activities, annual journals' strategy meeting, and other publications-related meetings as scheduled. Manages activities of the publications team at AWHONN meetings, including development and execution of the publications section of the AWHONN booth at the annual convention, and all materials for such meetings. Manages journals' awards, including coordinating travel, ordering custom awards, collaborating on press releases and promotion, and serving as on-site convention contact for awardee from rehearsal through the awards conveyance at a general convention session. Provides support for meeting preparation, mailings, file sharing, shipping, and other tasks as requested. Contacts Interfaces with others both within and outside the organization to manage responsibilities, obtain or clarify information, or provide information or facts. Interfaces with program and project teams and task forces to manage responsibilities. Contacts maybe by phone, in person, or email and may require confidentiality. Supervision Handles routine responsibilities independently, requiring guidance only for non-routine work that may be reviewed upon completion. Qualification Requirements Bachelor's degree in English, communications, or journalism or equivalent experience; Master's degree desirable. Experience with online manuscript submission and peer-review systems (Editorial Manager preferred, ScholarOne, Evise, or similar system). At least 1 to 2 years of scholarly content development and management, writing, copy editing, proofreading. Experience with social media management and analytics reporting. Experience with content creation, communication, production, and dissemination techniques and methods to educate and inform via all media. Ability to quickly synthesize complex information and discern essential messages for specific audiences, particularly health care providers and consumers. Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills and knowledge of grammar, usage, spelling, and style guides (particularly APA style) Organizational skills with demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex projects on asynchronous timelines, including strong ability to work to deadlines and to work independently. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate clearly and diplomatically. Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Suite and other commonly used publishing software packages. Demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment. Demonstrated experience working in a team environment. This position is based in the Washington DC home office with possible occasional work from home days. Relocation support may be available.
