The Assistant Director provides comprehensive, individualized professional development support to Juris Doctor (JD) and Master of Laws (LLM) students. This position focuses on individual student advising, as well as assisting with programming, to facilitate the mission of the office. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES : Advises and encourages students and alumni as they explore various career opportunities, including preparing them for potential challenges. Helps students and alumni create successful plans for their future employment, which includes reviewing resumes, cover letters, and other employment application materials, and conducting mock interviews. Develops and presents career-related programs and other learning opportunities to enhance student engagement. Collaborates with law student organizations and other law school departments on career-related initiatives. Creates marketing strategy and materials for print and social media. Develops a working knowledge regarding technology and related programs, including the department's contact management system and the federal courts' online application system. Maintains all materials in the office Resource Library and seeks to enhance office resources through review of print and internet materials. Handles the reciprocity process for students wishing to access other law schools' job banks, as well as the requests from other schools to provide their students with access to the contact management system. Assists with the collection, maintenance, security, and integrity of data used for required surveys and ad hoc reports. Attends networking events, career fairs and other interviewing programs, including travel, when required. Performs other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: J.D. from an ABA-approved law school preferred along with 2-3 years of demonstrated experience working with law students, preferably student advising in a higher education environment or combination of education and relevant law school career advising experience may be accepted as a substitute. Licensure preferred; membership with the State Bar of Texas is highly desirable. Prior experience in the practice of law strongly preferred. Particular preference for those who have 5 or more years of practice experience. Must clear and maintain a favorable background investigation and clearance Must have valid driver's license, motor vehicle liability insurance and personal injury insurance; or have a self-reliant source of transportation to conduct business on a daily basis Must have the ability to function as a team player in University activities including working some nights, weekends, occasional travel, and attending special events as necessary. Must have the ability to demonstrate intermediate to advanced skills in MS Office and MS 365 (Word, Excel, Teams, and PowerPoint, Publisher) experience with virtual meeting platforms such as Zoom. Experience with job bank systems (CORE or similar) and other web-based programs and applications. Uses various software applications, such as spreadsheets and contact management systems to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or reports. Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong public relations and customer service skills with an ability to implement diplomacy and discretion at all times; an ability to work effectively with communities across the university. Must have ability to prioritize and manage multiple deadlines; thrive in a complex work environment; displays solid problem solving and interpersonal skills; works well independently and as part of a team. Must have strong self-judgment abilities to assist in the preparation of department personnel policy information. Use discretion to complete work assignments. Initiative is frequently required to complete work assignments. Decisions are made regarding policy interpretation and individual work priorities Must have the ability to demonstrate a capacity for leadership, and the commitment to work collaboratively with a diverse and dynamic community. Must have a high attention to detail and be able to organize workflow, coordinate activities, balance simultaneous projects without loss of efficiency in a multi-tasked environment, and manage multiple priorities to meet deadlines. Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including early morning, nights, weekends, and Holidays to accommodate University events and projects; Must be able to travel as needed to off campus events and conferences. Must be flexible in every aspect and able to respond to any situation quickly and adequately. Must have a high ethical standard and a strong sense of confidentiality due to access to confidential data relating to student personal files and employer recruiting information; will be expected to maintain the confidentiality of the advisor-student relationship, make appropriate referrals, and will be responsible for appropriate management of personal and academic student data. PHYSICAL DEMANDS : Working conditions are in an office environment and university campus setting. Must be able to move across the university campus to conduct day to day business. While performing this role, the employee will be regularly required to sit, walk, and stand; talk and hear, both in person and by telephone; and use hands repetitively to operate standard office equipment; and occasionally required to lift up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Frequently communicates with others using approved technological resources; must be able to exchange accurate information through designated systems within a timely manner. Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery.
