ASSISTANT CONTROLLER- AT THE BOHEMIAN CLUB The historic Bohemian Club is seeking an accomplished and driven Assistant Controller to lead the accounting team at its sophisticated and stunning private social club. This role will oversee and execute the Bohemian Club's accounting operations, financial reporting, budget development, annual audit, tax return preparation, Grove events financial management, and accounting procedures and internal controls. This role supports both the City Club in downtown San Francisco and the Bohemian Grove in Sonoma County. The Assistant Controller is a member of the management team and a key business partner, enabling the seamless operation of the Club for both members and the operating team. This is an excellent opportunity for a seasoned Accountant who has the proven ability to think strategically and thrives on the hands-on financial responsibilities and member interactions. The Assistant Controller reports directly to the Controller. The Controller performs original work and manages a four-person accounting team. We are looking for a driven, detailed, and innovative leader, who is willing and able to address complex accounting and financial matters. Key initiatives and Responsibilities Lead The Accounting Team Oversee member receivables, payables, and financial reporting activities. Maintain proper accounting policies and internal controls. Review work for accuracy and quality standards. Mentor and train staff. Financial Reporting Coordinate and execute month-end and year-end accounting close. Prepare and review journal entries. Process approval of invoices for payment. Conduct monthly inventories. Review monthly department income statements to ensure complete and accurate. Attend Finance Committee meetings. Budget Development Support development of operating budget by department and capital project spending budget. Solicit financial input from Club committees and operating departments. Consolidate full year operating budget by department. Develop monthly operating budget by department. Annual Audit and Tax Return Preparation Assign audit material preparation to staff and coordinate transmittal to auditors. Support follow-up data requests from Auditors. Provide data requested for development of Form 990 and tax return. Attend Audit Committee meetings. Grove Events Financial Management Lead financial management of Spring Jinks and Encampment events. Support development of pricing for admission fees and services. Review and process member billings and vendor invoices. Conduct inventory at end of events. Other Initiatives and Responsibilities Coordinate and provide key inputs to annual insurance renewal. Prepare County property tax filings. Review semi-monthly payroll. Oversee 401(k) pension plan payments to employees. Maintain historical and present year dues, fees, and services pricing. Perform other duties as assigned. CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS A history of progressive accounting management experience. A thorough understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). Minimum of 5 years prior experience, preferably with non-profit accounting experience. Work with a high level of integrity, confidentiality, and professionalism, demonstrating sound judgment. Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Ability to work effectively with others, building and maintaining relationships. Attention to detail is a significant focus of this role; handling those details quickly, correctly, and efficiently. Ability to maintain calm and reason, be a good listener, and deal well with interruptions and competing priorities throughout the day. Ability to travel to the Grove. Candidates also must be available to work at the Grove during the 4-week long summer events (housing provided). Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Excel. Experience with Salesforce, Intacct, and Point-Of-Sales systems is a plus. EDUCATIONAL AND CERTIFICATION QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance. Certified Public Accountant is a plus. SALARY AND BENEFITS Salary is open and commensurate with qualifications and experience. The Club offers an excellent bonus and benefits package.
