The Advancement Intern works with a vibrant fundraising team encompassing annual giving/ membership, digital fundraising, alumni relations, and major gifts. In this paid position, the Advancement Intern will help Society for Science enhance our website; improve our communication with alumni, members, and donors; streamline internal processes; improve our data hygiene; and report to donors on the impact of their giving.  Start date in early February 2023 is negotiable. Applicants planning to receive course credit for this internship should provide any necessary information regarding requirements to the Society. Primary Responsibilities Assist with building out the donor, alumni, and volunteer testimonial section of the Society for Science website: collecting stories, quotes, and photos from constituents, keeping a spreadsheet of stories and photos yet to be requested and received, and editing and publishing selected stories/photos Work with the Senior Digital Fundraising and Individual Giving Specialist to create and implement digital communications, including fundraising appeals and stewardship Assist in updating internal content calendar on a weekly and monthly basis Create / update spreadsheet compendium of top competition finalists/winners for the Society's two most recent STEM competitions Collaborate with team to develop new creative material for various 2023 fundraising campaigns Assist in reviewing print proofs of general donor and member acknowledgement letters Perform data entry and analysis using the database Blackbaud Raiser's Edge Analyze and organize Advancement's shared files to maximize efficiency and to improve usage Proofread various Advancement materials including donor testimonials, donor letters, email communications, etc. Competencies Excellent written and verbal communication skills Proficiency in Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook Creativity, energy, and ability to think "outside the box" High attention to detail; demonstrated proactive and strategic approach to daily tasks Demonstrated ability to work with others as a team as well as to work independently Database experience preferred (Blackbaud Raiser's Edge, Access, Excel) Customer service experience desirable Understanding of and affinity for the core values of the Society Work Environment The internship can be hybrid or remote; our offices are in the Dupont Circle area of Washington, DC. Society for Science has mandated the COVID-19 vaccine for all employees, as applicable. Physical Demands The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to operate a computer and other office equipment. Position Type and Expected Hours This is a part-time internship with a term of approximately six months. The Advancement Intern will work 15-18 hours per week and will be paid a rate of $16.10 per hour. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday during normal office hours of the Society. Required Education and Experience Interns must be current undergraduate or graduate students at a college or university. Preference is given to students who are considering careers at educational institutions or non-profits and/or have an interest in fundraising, membership, institutional giving, communications, alumni relations, advancement, or audience development.
