SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE The Adoption Specialist's objective is to find a pet for every home by partnering with potential adopters and supporting them to be the best pet parents they can be. The Adoption Specialist will also be responsible for providing daily care to animals on the adoption floor. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS You must be 18 years or older to apply. Customer Service Facilitate customer interactions with animals while providing positive, objective, useful information in a conversation-based approach that encourages dialogue. Look for ways to make an adoption successful, not to deny. Provide post-adoption support to adopters. Practice compassion, empathy, and active listening during highly emotional conversations Animal Care Clean rooms/cages and keep all animals comfortable, ensuring they have proper food, water, and enrichment, while monitoring them for physical and/or behavioral concerns and reporting any issues as they arise. Handle animals in a safe and humane manner as you move them throughout the building, based on their adoption/availability status. Work with animals in need of specialized behavioral care and training Administrative Follow YWAC's procedures, guidelines, and protocols for the safe handling of animals and customer service. Other Duties/Functions Provide support to the YWAC's team effort including, but not limited to: Communicate regularly with supervisors and coworkers to ensure that they are aware of any issues pertinent to their areas of responsibility. Participate in staff meetings to share ideas and suggestions for improving animal care and the quality of the organization as a whole. Work collaboratively with other departments and with volunteers. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY This position does not have supervisory responsibility. WORK ENVIRONMENT/ EQUIPMENT USE Indoors in a high noise air-conditioned/heated building, outdoors at shelter, or on-location for various activities. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as PC, printer, copy machine, fax machine, filing cabinets, telephone, as well as cleaning equipment and supplies. PHYSICAL/MENTAL/SENSORY DEMANDS The demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 100 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Regular exposure to animals and their bodily fluids, cleaning chemicals, fumes, dust, bites, and scratches. Duties are performed indoors in a high-noise air-conditioned/heated building, outdoors at the shelter, or on-location for various activities. Must use self-care skills to combat compassion fatigue. POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK This is a full-time position, working 8 hours daily with a varying schedule. Evening, weekend, and holiday hours will be required. Requirements EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Candidates must be 18 years or older. High school diploma or equivalent is required. Preferred Customer service experience Previous volunteer experience (with people or animals) Previous animal handling experience SKILLS AND PROFICIENCIES Work independently with minimal supervision. Positive, optimistic outlook. Ability to handle multiple tasks in a busy workplace environment. Understanding of animal behavior and/or common medical concerns. Understanding of humane care and treatment of animals.
