Summary The College of Engineering at the University of Michigan invites applications and nominations for the esteemed position of Chair of the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Division. Reporting directly to the Dean of the College of Engineering, the ECE Chair assumes independent and full responsibility for guiding the Division, which is an integral part of the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) Department. The ECE Chair serves as Co-Chair of the EECS Department, having joint responsibility with the Chair of the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) Division for shared educational and research activities. Who We Are With more than one hundred years of history, Michigan has one of the oldest and most renowned programs in electrical and computer engineering in the world. ECE has approximately 72 core faculty members (tenured and tenure-track), 74 staff, 958 graduate students, 593 undergraduates, and an alumni population of approximately 17,000. We greatly value interdisciplinary collaborative relationships with faculty in other areas, leading to a large variety of joint and courtesy appointments. The core instructional and research areas include Control Systems, Electromagnetics, Engineering Education Research, Integrated Circuits & VLSI, Computer Vision, Machine Learning, MEMS & Microsystems, Network, Communication, and Information Systems, Optics & Photonics, Power & Energy Systems and Technology, Robotics, Signal & Image Processing, Solid-State Devices & Nanotechnology, and Quantum Science and Technology. Responsibilities* The successful candidate will: Lead the Division with a compelling vision for ECE leveraging the strengths of the faculty. Align the Division with the strategic vision of Michigan Engineering. Uphold, enhance and promote excellence in scholarship and research in the Division. Foster excellence and innovation in undergraduate and graduate curricula. Lead efforts to recruit and retain talented and diverse faculty. Demonstrate a commitment to DEI principles. Own and oversee the budget for the Division. Lead development activities, and interact with government, industry, and professional societies. Sustain and grow connections with industry and alumni. Demonstrate strong abilities in supporting and promoting sponsored research programs, including faculty pursuing large multidisciplinary centers. Cultivate a culture of collaboration and respect among faculty, staff, and students. Work with faculty, staff, students, and administrators to realize shared goals. Required Qualifications* The ideal candidate for Chair will be a distinguished scholar holding a doctorate in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related field, demonstrating an exemplary track record in research, teaching, and service commensurate with a tenured full professor appointment. The candidate must possess visionary leadership abilities, a broad appreciation for the diverse perspectives within the department, a strong interest in mentoring faculty, and promoting impactful research across all current and future areas in ECE. The candidate will lead and support the faculty to ensure that learning of the highest quality flourishes at all levels, from undergraduate education to graduate and postdoctoral research. The candidate will work with a diverse group of faculty, staff, students, and administrators to achieve common goals and to maintain rapport with alumni and industry representatives.
