Position Description: The Program Instructor, Early Learning Readiness (ELR) supports the work of the YMCA, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Program Instructor, ELR creates positive, nurturing relationship with children, while building cooperative relationships with parents/caregivers, staff and partners. The YMCA's Early Learning Readiness program is a family engagement program that provides a stimulating environment for children, ages 0-5 and their parents/caregivers, which children develop physical, verbal and social skills to prepare them for kindergarten and beyond. Under the supervision of the Family Resource Director, the Program Instructor, ELR, will facilitate the program up to three days per week, plus one additional day for program prep and professional development . This includes leading a two (2) hour ELR class for children, parents and caregivers, twice a week and assisting with/co-leading (with the Family Resource Director) a two (2) hours ELR workshop for parents and caregivers, once a week. For the child, parent, and caregiver class, the Program Instructor, ELR will set-up 13 learning stations for children and their parents/caregivers to navigate through, ensuring safety and age-appropriateness. Stations will be selected based on the provided monthly theme. Lesson plans, supplies and equipment are made available to execute the classes. Consistency is paramount for the success of this role. If the Program Instructor, ELR, is unable to work a scheduled shift, the Program Instructor, ELR, will be required to schedule a make-up class for program participants within ten days of the originally scheduled class. This position is supported by a Family Resource Director, who is also a Social Worker. Through this support, families will be provided with additional resources, will be connected to community partners and will engage with other families through meaningful programming. As the program grows, Social Worker interns from local colleges will be available to support the families and children's development. The Program Instructor, ELR, will assist their supervisor in identifying community partnerships for families and will assist with outreach opportunities and efforts to recruit families. The Program Instructor, ELR, will also assist their supervisor in administering developmental screenings (training will be provided), as well as program evaluations to measure and report on the impact and quality of the program. The Program Instructor, ELR, will also participate in regularly scheduled weekly team meetings and professional development sessions throughout the year. This is a seasonal position, typically operating from August to June (school year). Typical shifts are listed below. There are occasional night and weekend shifts required for training, professional development and/or special events. In addition, this position provides up to 4 hours per week for planning and up to 4+ hours a month of paid staff training, professional development and meetings. Approximately 12-20 hours, per week. This program typically operates on a similar schedule as the school district, with the program being closed for most holidays and during school intersession breaks. Position Logistics/Benefits Part-Time positions (about 12-20 hours, per week). Classes are held twice a week, Mondays and Wednesday, from 10am-12pm . The typical shift is 9am-1pm , as there is an hour of prep time before the class and an hour of tear-down time after the class. In addition to this schedule, the position also include mandatory trainings and professional development (typically on Fridays). Typical Schedule: Mondays: 9am-1pm Tuesdays: Off Wednesdays: 9am-1pm Thursdays: Off Friday: 9am-1pm Free facility access to our 26 greater Los Angeles branches for you, your spouse or domestic partner and for your minor children (this includes FREE access to our fitness center, gym, weight room, indoor/outdoor pools, group exercise classes, on-site child care, etc.) Free before and after school child care for your age-eligible children in grades TK-5th (some sites accept up to 6th grade), at one of our before and after school sites. The program is typically closed the week of Thanksgiving, for two weeks around the Christmas/New Year's holidays and a week during spring break. Qualifications Must be 18 years-old or older. High school diploma or equivalent Bilingual, English/Spanish. Ability to lift and move up to 35lbs or equipment. Units in child development, early childhood education, family and consumer studies, human services, social work, health/nutrition or a related field is strongly preferred, but not required. Current TB Test (upon hire, all new employees have access to complete a free TB test through our medical partners, Concentra). Must have reliable transportation - there are occasional trainings and meetings that take place in the Greater Los Angeles area and that do require travel. The YMCA reimburses employees for all business related travel in the form of a mileage reimbursement. Hourly Salary $18.00-$19.00, per hour.
