This is a residential position and teachers will be provided with room and board in the university residence halls. A commuter position may also be available for local instructors. COURSE DESCRIPTIONS 2 half day positions available (SAT Instructor and Personal Statement/College Counseling Instructor) - indicate your preferences on the application. It is also possible for a single person to teach all three components as a full day instructor. SAT Exam Preparation: Students enrolled in the program have the opportunity to intensively concentrate on SAT preparation without the distractions of school-year assignments, clubs, and activities. Participants receive more than 35-hours of instruction in addition to taking 3 full-length practice SAT exams over the course of two weeks. This is an opportunity for students to learn the skills and strategies required for success on the SAT, including grammar skills, advanced math, and critical reading. Our experienced instructors employ our time-tested SAT curriculum, which familiarizes students with all aspects of the SAT exam. Our focus is on providing students with test-taking strategies and reasoning skills to employ, rather than training students to rely primarily on tricks. Our SAT students have historically scored average increases of nearly 200 points.The curriculum utilizes College Board materials rather than trying to mimic the College Board’s questions. All exams are purchased directly from the test maker. Personal Statement Writing: Personal Statement instruction is not an afterthought but a significant part of the daily schedule. Students receive one-on-one advice and instruction from the best English educators, in order that they may complete this portion of their application by the end of the programIn the college admissions process, the Personal Statement is a chance for your student to stand out in the crowd. Personal statements are a significant platform to demonstrate their facility with writing, allow their uniqueness to shine through, and identify less quantifiable characteristics for college admittance. College Admission Prep Camp offers every student hours of one-on-one consulting with expert writing instructors to hone this critically important piece of writing.Personal Statement Writing teaches students how to present themselves in the most positive light during the college admission process. Students will learn to express their self-awareness, imagination, and curiosity which will help them to be attractive candidates for selective colleges. Students learn how to choose a topic, develop ideas, edit for content and style, and avoid common pitfalls that weaken an applicant’s chances of admission. By the end of the program, each student will have written 2-3 essay responses from the frequently used Common Application and exploration of supplemental essay topics that are ready for submission with his or her college application. College Counseling: Even at the most prestigious private high schools, the ratio of students to counselors can exceed 100:1, offering minimal individual contact and attention. College Admission Prep Camp provides each participant with direct access to some of the top guidance counselors in the country. After taking an initial interest inventory, college counselors help to identify excellent universities that are appropriate for each student’s interests and academic background. Students leave at the end of camp with a list of potential schools that have been reviewed, researched, and discussed individually with a college counselor. JOB DESCRIPTIONS SAT Instructor: The primary responsibility of the SAT Instructor is to guide students through the Education Unlimited SAT curriculum in a classroom setting and to motivate and encourage students to improve their test-taking abilities. The instructor should be familiar with the substance of the tests and should be motivated to help students succeed on the exam. The instructor will deliver lectures, lead class exercises, provide one-on-one tutoring, and proctor practice exams. Instructors will also be responsible for tracking student work and handing in any deliverables to the camp director and EU home office.Class sizes are kept purposefully small (average 10 students) to allow teachers the ability to really give students the personalized attention and feedback they need. In addition to teaching, instructors will be responsible for assisting students as needed in one-on-one feedback sessions. Personal Statement/College Counseling Instructor: The Personal Statement/College Counseling Instructor is responsible for guiding students through two components of our College Admissions Prep Camp Instruction: First, they will help each student complete 1-2 longer or several shorter personal statement responses so that are ready or nearly ready for submission with their college applications. The goal of the curriculum is to help each student through the process of brainstorming, writing, and revising a strong essay that is entirely the student's own work. The instructor will deliver group instruction on writing for college admissions and will give students one-on-one feedback on their writing. In addition, the instructor will lead a small group and one-on-one college counseling sessions with the students. They will walk them through the admissions process from A to Z helping them to create a detailed timeline/action plan based on their individual goals. As part of this process students will create a list of schools they wish to apply to that includes some safe schools, some reach schools and some just right schools. Students will make note of admissions deadlines so that they can backward plan a strategy for maximizing their chances of acceptance at one of their top choice schools. On-Campus Additional Duties: ( There may be an option to waive these and commute - indicate this preference on your application ): In addition to teaching responsibilities, on-campus instructors should be available and willing to assist the camp director with active supervision, recreational activities, and some administrative tasks. Instructors should be mature, reliable, and able to work well with fellow staffers. Instructors are also expected to act as mentors and will help guide students on excursions. With the support of the entire staff, instructors are responsible for the health and safety of students, in addition to fulfilling instructional objectives. Qualifications: SAT INSTRUCTOR: The ideal instructor will have significant experience teaching ALL sections of the SAT. There is some chance of splitting the position between two people who specializes in the various parts of the SAT, but our ideal candidate would be able to teach both portions. Note, simply having done well on the SAT, being intelligent etc, does not qualify you for this position. You must have a deep understanding of the exam, and success in helping others to master it. List specific and detailed experience on your application to draw yourself apart from other applicants. College Counseling/College Admissions Essay: The ideal instructor will have significant college essay writing and college counseling experience. Simply having gotten into a top tier college or helping family members to do so, does not qualify you for this position. We are also not seeking general writing instructors. We are looking for someone with specialized College Admissions experience who can really make an impact for our students. Recent experience in and understanding of college admissions Masters Degree preferred for SAT, Required for College counseling A calm and professional demeanor. Good listener, supportive and positive coach 3+ years of successful experience doing similar work Extensive subject matter knowledge The willingness and ability to work long hours.
