Designs and conducts studies to investigate specific basic science or clinical research questions within field of expertise. Develops procedures and participates in the publication of research results as necessary. Job Overview The laboratory of Dr. Paul Geeleher (appointments in the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Center , the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences , and Department of Computational Biology ) is seeking a wet-lab Staff Scientist or Sr Scientist to work on mechanistic dissection of hits from high throughput drug and CRISPR screens, the development of new drug combinations, and mechanistic dissection of drug resistance mechanisms in neuroblastoma. Candidates will be considered at the Scientist and Sr Scientist level. Job Description Dr. Geeleher's tightly integrates wet-bench and computational approaches, aimed at improving outcomes in pediatric cancers, especially neuroblastoma. Our group has spearheaded publications in e.g. Nature , Genome Biology , Journal of the National Cancer Institute ( JNCI ), and Nature Communications , and is funded by the NIH (R01, R00, R35 awards). We are also closely integrated into the Pediatric Cancer Dependency Map (PedDep), a large multi-institutional collaboration between St. Jude, Dana Farber, and the Broad Institute, aimed at discovering new therapeutic targets and drug repurposing opportunities in pediatrics - discoveries that require substantial subsequent work up in the wet-lab.Examples of recent papers led by wet-lab scientists in our lab (as first author) include: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-021-26640-x https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-023-43134-0 https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2024.05.09.593394v1 (under consideration at Cancer Cell ) Job Responsibilities: The qualified candidate will be responsible for leading and publishing complex research projects. The qualified candidate should be very comfortable independently performing the standard cell and molecular biology assays and be able to learn and implement new assays as needed, given the research direction. The qualified candidate should be able to lead a research project and be comfortable drafting a manuscript. The qualified candidates should represent a mentor and role model to junior lab members. Performs other related duties as assigned in order to meet the goals of the department and institution. Preferred Knowledge and Skills: Experience in all basic molecular biology such as cell culture, PCR, QPCR, DNA isolation, and RNA isolation, Western blotting etc. An ability to quickly learn and implement new/advanced assays based on research direction is highly desired. Ability to spearhead a complex research project. Experience with animal models is desirable. Experience in pediatric cancer, especially neuroblastoma, is desirable but not required. Familiarity with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word software. Good written and spoken English and presentation/communication skills. A PhD is necessary in all but very rare/exceptional cases. Postdoc experience is desirable, and a strong publication track record is essential. Minimum Education and/or Training: A bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific area is required. Scientist Minimum Experience: Seven (7) years of relevant post-degree work experience is required Five (5) years of relevant post-degree work experience is required with a Master's degree Three (3) years of relevant post-degree work experience is required with a PhD Prior experience in lab techniques preferred. Experience in lab and scientific project coordination, maintenance, and other research support activities preferred. Sr Scientist Minimum Experience: Ten (10) years of relevant post-degree work experience is required Eight (8) years of relevant post-degree work experience is required with a Master's degree Six (6) years of relevant post-degree work experience is required with a PhD Prior experience in lab techniques and processes preferred. Experience working with applicable regulations and lab protocols preferred. Experience working with computerized databases and/or software preferred as applicable. Experience in lab and scientific project coordination, maintenance, and other research support activities preferred. Proven performance in earlier role/comparable role. This position is located in Memphis, TN (100% on-site position), and relocation assistance is available. Compensation In recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
