Responsibilities* Remove ice and snow from walks, steps, building entrances, ramps, paths, drives and parking lots, utilizing power equipment and hand operated tools. Apply de-icing material as directed. Operate hand and riding mowers, weed whips, edgers and blowers. Plant, transplant, fertilize, cultivate, irrigate, and seed perennial, biennial, and annual plant and shrubbery beds. Mow, irrigate, fertilize, rake, hoe, sweep, spray, and plant ground cover or grass areas. Operate a variety of motor vehicles to collect, haul, and dispose of refuse and debris, and as otherwise necessary to perform assigned duties. Control weeds by hand removal and cultivation. Clean, sharpen, and lubricate hand and power equipment, such as hoes, shovels, pruning shears, sprayers, and rotary mowers. Clean and maintain parking lots. Install sign posts and signs using air hammers and pounders. Erect street and pedestrian signs and barricades. Transport material by wheelbarrow and motor vehicles. Trim, prune, plant, spray and remove shrubs, trees, and brush. Clean assigned areas of work and equipment. RELATED DUTIES: Operate power equipment and machinery including tractors, riding mowers, utility carts with or without brooms and plows, dump tricks, pickup trucks, and other motorized vehicles and equipment. Operate with proficiency a variety of hand tools related to landscape tasks including but not limited to clippers, loppers, shears, saws, shovels, rakes, brooms, posthole diggers, fence post pounders, etc? Operate with proficiency a variety of power tools related to landscape tasks including but not limited to: string trimmers, edgers, blowers, rototillers, hedge trimmers, etc? Operate motor vehicles safely at all times. Take part in and complete all assigned duties in an efficient and effective manner and accept responsibility for caring for the campus and for your work. Accept training and educational assignments and adjust actions as needed. Preform basic building maintenance tasks. Required Qualifications* Must possess a solid working knowledge of turf grass and woody plant proper maintenance techniques. Graduation from high school is necessary. Must have a clear understanding of spoken and written English. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly. Possession of a valid State of Michigan driver?s license in good standing is required at all times for employment in this position. The lack of which is subject to termination of employment as determined by department management. Must be able to pass a MDOT physical and maintain certification at all times for employment in this position. UM-D will pay for testing. This position is considered ESSENTIAL and requires the ability to work a variable work shift to meet seasonal and campus needs. Must be able to work a flexible shift including weekends, overtime, and possibly holidays. This position is considered ESSENTIAL and requires the employee to accept on-call assignments and to respond to call-ins for emergency situations including winter weather mitigation. Abide by all areas of the most recent AFSCME and UM Regents Collective Bargaining Agreement.
