Job Summary: We are looking for a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor to provide general support and guidance to pregnant and breastfeeding women enrolled in the WIC program. The Peer Counselor will work one-one-with with clients to encourage breastfeeding and help overcome common barriers and concerns. Essential Functions/Key Responsibilities: Attends breastfeeding training classes to become a peer counselor. Receives a caseload of WIC mothers and makes routine periodic contacts with all mothers assigned. Gives basic breastfeeding information and support to new mothers, including telling them about the benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers, and getting a good start with breastfeeding. Helps mothers prevent and handle common breastfeeding concerns. Counsels WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers by telephone, clinic visits, and/or hospital visits at scheduled intervals determined by the local WIC Program. Respects each mother by keeping her information strictly confidential. Keeps accurate records of all contacts made with WIC mothers. Refers mothers, according to clinic-established protocols, to: WIC nutritionist or breastfeeding coordinator; lactation consultant; mother’s physician or nurse; public health programs in the community; social service agencies. Attends and assists with prenatal classes and breastfeeding support groups. Attends bi-weekly staff meetings and breastfeeding conferences/workshops as appropriate. Reads assigned books and materials on breastfeeding that are provided by the supervisor. May assist WIC staff in promoting breastfeeding peer counseling through special projects and duties, as assigned. Skills & Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent required. Has breastfed at least one baby (does not have to be currently breastfeeding). Is enthusiastic about breastfeeding and wants to help other mothers enjoy a positive experience. Is a current or previous WIC participant or has similarities with the WIC participants served. Has access to reliable transportation. Available to work at least one Saturday a month. Bilingual (Spanish and English) preferred. Must have a suitable CORI & SORI completed within the first 30 days of employment. Ability to work effectively with and meet the needs of people from a diverse range of backgrounds, cultures, and identities, including underserved communities and people from the different racial groups, socioeconomic statuses, nationalities, and languages that make up GLCAC’s clientele, to support the agency’s mission of building a more diverse, equitable and inclusive organization for employees and clients alike. Supervisory Responsibility: None Travel: Travel between program sites is required. Occasional travel off-site to trainings and meetings is also required. Physical Demands: This job regularly requires the employee to sit, walk and stand as well as use hands repetitively to handle or operate standard office equipment. The employee is occasionally required to kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Work Environment: This job operates in a professional office environment and uses standard office equipment, such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, fax machines.Powered by JazzHR
