To quote a popular saying at TNC, "you'll join for the mission, and you'll stay for the people."WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHERThe Grand Calumet River Restoration Field Technician Seasonal participate in restoration efforts as part of a Grand Calumet River Restoration Action Team. They assist in maintaining preserve areas and riverine marshes. Work may include controlling exotic invasive species; maintaining tools and equipment; monitoring wildlife; conducting preserve maintenance; learning how to identify native and non-native species; and preparing sites for prescribed burns.Responsibilities & Scope: Teamwork within TNC and across partner organizations; interact with diverse groups in a respectful and professional manner. May work under close or infrequent supervision and make day to day decisions as delegated by supervisor. Requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain. Irregular work hours and long days, particularly during spring and fall fire seasons. May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain. This is a short-term, full-time (40 hours/week), hands-on, field position based at our Southern Lake Michigan Rim Office in Merrillville, Indiana, lasting until November 2024 .WE'RE LOOKING FOR YOUThe Nature Conservancy in Indiana is looking for Grand Calumet River Restoration Field Technician Seasonals to join our staff in protecting more than 500 acres, including globally rare dune and swale habitat, across northern Lake County, Indiana. Restoration efforts are geared towards reinstating beneficial uses related to wildlife and wildlife habitat. This is a unique opportunity to work in an area that contains more than 30 percent of Indiana's rare and endangered species, while expanding your conservation knowledge and skills for the next phase of your career!WHAT YOU'LL BRING Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED; and 6 months of related experience. Experience performing physical work and ability to carry a 35-pound backpack sprayer. Experience working in a team environment. Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. lawn mower, chainsaw, brushcutter, etc.). Able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required (e.g. First Aid, CPR, etc.). Desired Qualifications Knowledge of Northwest Indiana plants/community types. Experience using common and/or field related software applications (e.g.; Microsoft apps, web browsers, Google Earth, ArcGIS). WHAT WE BRINGSince 1951, TNC has been doing work you can believe in. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate's actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges.
