JOB SUMMARY: Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) seeks a full time Internal Medicine faculty member with focus in geriatrics for the Department of Internal Medicine in Asheville, NC. Fellowship in Geriatrics is preferred, though applicants with experience and commitment to practice of General Internal Medicine with an older population will be considered. The faculty member will provide excellent, evidence-based, efficient patient care services, as well as resident and student teaching, mentoring, curriculum planning and effective supervision. This role will directly care for patients in the faculty outpatient practice, affiliated skilled nursing, long-term care and assisted living facilities and geriatrics off-site practices. Opportunities for inpatient care, supervision, and teaching are also available. The Internal Medicine - Geriatrics-Focused Faculty member will provide excellent, evidence-based, efficient patient care services, as well as resident and student teaching, mentoring, curriculum planning and effective supervision. Directly care for ambulatory patients in the faculty outpatient practice, affiliated skilled nursing, long-term care and assisted living facilities and geriatrics off-site practices Supervise the care provided to patients by house staff in patient care settings Improve the quality and efficiency of ambulatory care at MAHEC If interested, directly care for hospitalized patients on the general medicine inpatient service working on teams with house staff and students Mentor learners in evidence-based medical care for geriatric patients Participate in and foster scholarship in the ambulatory setting Work within MAHEC and with other departments to further the effective management of ambulatory and hospitalized patients SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES: CLINICAL Provide direct clinical care to ambulatory geriatric patients, patients in nursing facilities and in other geriatrics sites, and to hospitalized patients (if interested), with the amount of time spent in the outpatient and inpatient venues determined by mutual agreement with the Department Chair Participate in the faculty on-call system, including night and weekend on-call duties (telephone call only; no in-hospital on-call responsibilities) Comply in a timely manner with all institutional policies for professional work, including credentialing, documentation, and billing Work effectively with other members of the extended inter-professional team Additional clinical duties as necessary for emergent situations or as arranged otherwise with the employee. TEACHING Serve as a faculty advisor and mentor for residents, if desired Supervise and teach residents and students in clinical settings Promote and participate in education programs of the department (continuing education, resident, student), to include didactics in geriatrics Conduct teaching activities that use contemporary adult learning methods to promote evidence-based practice Demonstrate effective teaching skills and continually develop as a teacher for learners at all levels Complete required evaluations of learners in a timely manner-including but not limited to written and verbal feedback. Participate in other learning activities such as morning report, core conference, and other formal educational programs for undergraduate and post-graduate learners RESEARCH Participate in clinical and educational research, according to skills, interest, and funding (research opportunities may include performance improvement initiatives or formal extramurally funded investigations) Demonstrate commitment to community-based health sciences and research ADMINISTRATIVE Work with institutional staff and administration to attain the strategic objectives of MAHEC, including patient safety, patient and other customer satisfaction, maintenance and enhancement of public perception, and fiscal health Participate, based on experience/skills, on committees and work groups as appropriate within the department and within MAHEC KEY COMPETENCIES: Communication Skills Effectively and respectably communicate with other individuals, whether it be a colleague, patient, or patient's family member and appropriately enumerate information in a manner easily understood by all parties. We do this to foster a culture of understanding between all parties, especially in complex and difficult situations, to ultimately provide the best care possible to our patients and their families. Decision Making Ability to make the most appropriate decision in a given situation and then taking the next steps to ensure appropriate and timely completion. This requires conflict resolution skills, critical thinking skills, confidence in your ability to make the right decision in most situations. This also includes ability to prioritize your workday appropriately to ensure the most important tasks are complete. HealthCare Knowledge Having the drive to keep yourself abreast and up to date on the new breakthroughs in your area of expertise and communicating them to the rest of the team, as appropriate. This also includes keeping up with your licensure and yearly training requirements within your area expertise along with MAHEC's organizational training. Finally, the ability to apply the depth of knowledge maintained and gained through this process in real life scenarios as appropriate. Interpersonal Skills Showing the ability to meet difficult situations with grace, professionalism, and understanding. Within your area of expertise, showing respect and showing empathy where appropriate with your colleagues, patients, and their family at all times, even when its most difficult to do so. This is done, in part, by effective listening, being your authentic self, showing responsibility and dependability, and being patient with others. SPECIFIED SKILLS COMPUTER Experience using Electronic Medical Records preferred COMMUNICATION Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one situations to patients required. Ability to effectively present information in group situations and respond to questions from individuals and groups required. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, legal documents, or governmental regulations required. Ability to document medical information into patient records/charts required FOREIGN LANGUAGE Spanish speaking skills preferred. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Not Applicable. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Not Applicable. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum of 3 years clinical practice experience post residency training, or completion of faculty development fellowship preferred PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Teaching experience preferred REQUIRED LICENSES: Licensure to practice medicine in North Carolina Certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine Practice or is Board Eligible Appointment in good standing to the medical staff of Mission Hospital SCHEDULE: Regular attendance on-site is an essential function of this position. Typical business hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm (or flexed to best meet the needs of the clients and/or the Division); 40 hours per workweek; weekend, holiday, or evening coverage is occasionally required. Work hours will need to be flexible in order to respond to special work assignments, or evening activities, as requested by the team leader.
