Job Summary Ultrasound Technicians, also known as diagnostic medical sonographers, use specialized equipment to create images, pictures and videotape of patient’s bodies using high frequency sound waves. They operate ultrasound equipment, record the outcomes of results and present the results and patient history to the physician for his or her interpretation. Essential Job Functions Records any relevant medical history. Perform ultrasonic diagnostic procedures in accordance with accepted protocols as directed by physicians. Instruct patients regarding procedures to ensure cooperation and optimum test results. Follows prescribed safety standards in operating equipment. Maintains examination rooms and work areas. Order and stock all ultrasound supplies cleans and maintains ultrasound equipment. Interacts compassionately and effectively with patients; is knowledgeable of the risk of possible exposures to blood and body fluids. Acquires and analyzes data that is generated by various ultrasound machines and related technologies. Provides summaries of findings to physicians to assist with patient diagnosis and management. Assists in electronic and clerical scheduling, record keeping and computerized image archiving. Maintains the equipment. Complies with all regulatory regulations, including NorthShore Health Centers policies and Procedures and the Indiana State Department of Health regulations. Participates in department-specific Quality Assurance programs. Complies with OSHA, universal precautions, and Exposure Control Plan. Attends in-services, meetings, and mandatory training as required. Executes verbal and/or written specific assigned tasks requiring similar or lesser skills and abilities some of which are continuing while others are occasional in nature. *This job description is not an all-inclusive list of functions and tasks.
