FIREFIGHTER DEPARTMENT: FIRESALARY RANGE: $17.59 per hour, Part-TimeGENERAL DESCRIPTION: Firefighting work is combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires, answering emergency calls. Works as a member of a team in search and rescue operations at the scene of a fire. Performs life support independently at the scene of an emergency or under the direction of a licensed physician. Performs operational and routine custodial maintenance of fire department equipment, apparatus and quarters. Accountable to and works under the direction of the Fire Captain and Fire Chief. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Participates in fire drills and attends training classes in firefighting, first-aid, fire prevention inspections and pre-planning demonstrations and public education. Inspects fire equipment to verify proper operation, refuels equipment, and reports needed maintenance. Performs general maintenance and cleaning of apparatus, equipment, furnishings, and facility. Responds to alarms of fires and other emergency calls and operates various fire equipment such as hose lines and hydraulic rescue tools. Donning and use of self-contained breathing apparatus. Conducts activities as needed to protect life, property and stabilize incidents. Performs rescue and first-aid work not necessarily related to fire fighting. Performs salvage operations, such as placing salvage covers, sweeping water, and removing debris. Performs water rescue operations with boat. Participates in pre-emergency planning and performs emergency operations during natural disasters and catastrophic events. Obtains retraining and certification as required. May be required to act as step-up driver engineer as needed. Performs other duties as directed or required of the Fire Chief. May be required to work overtime, or alternate hours, as necessary for the efficient operation of the department. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: State of Florida Fire Fighter II Certification State of Florida Emergency Medical Technician Certification Valid Florida Driver’s License KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of fire department operations, fire prevention inspections, operations of firefighting apparatus, and proper use of equipment and tools. Knowledge of all streets, alleys buildings and layout of the city Skill in performing complete patient assessments. Skill in the use and manipulation of tools and apparatus used in firefighting. Skill and dexterity in the use and manipulation of tools and apparatus used in emergency conditions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and general public. Ability to climb ladders and work at considerable heights. Ability to perform limited mechanical work involved in maintaining firefighting and rescue apparatus, equipment, and tools. Ability to adapt quickly to changing situations under emergency conditions. Ability to learn a variety of firefighting and rescue methods and techniques. Ability to speak, write, and follow oral and written instructions. Physical ability to perform job requirements. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High school graduation or possession of an equivalent diploma. Must meet all requirements of firefighting. ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL CONDITIONS: Works in an outdoor environment. Requires heavy work that involves constantly lifting, pushing, or raising objects, and exerting 50 to 75 pounds on a recurring basis and exerting 100 pounds of force on a frequent basis. The job risks exposure to the following environmental hazards: Bright/dim light, dusts and pollen, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels, fumes and/or noxious odors, traffic, moving machinery, electrical shock, heights, disease/pathogens, toxic/caustic chemicals, explosives, and violence. The job requires normal visual acuity, and field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of taste, sense of smell, depth perception, and texture perception. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job function duty satisfactorily.
