About the position As the Safety Director, you will provide leadership for the organization's safety program at the national and regional levels. Responsible for the successful development and implementation of thorough, practical, strategic, and effective corporate safety and claims programs at the Company. The Safety Director ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local rules and regulations related to accident and hazard prevention and claims, employee education and OSHA, DOT, and MSHA requirements, all under the guidance of the Company's mission statement, corporate vision, and code of conduct/ethical business practices, and in alignment with all Company policies, procedures, key objectives and regulations. Day in the life Works closely with executive and regional senior leadership to direct the development, communication, and implementation of an effective safety strategy to assess and mitigate strategic and operational safety and security-related threats/risks, manage crises, claims and incidents and to appropriately safeguard the organization. Provides strong professional leadership of the Company safety programs, policies and procedures by promoting a world class safety culture, establishing and monitoring annual safety goals, and providing effective collaboration with safety, operational leaders, claims team members, project team leaders and outside customer, vendor, and subcontractor partnerships. Works with management and the safety teams to hold employees accountable to Company safety policies/procedures and regulatory compliance and provides high quality hiring of safety professionals for regional and national projects, communications, mentoring and training to safety teams as needed. Annually evaluates and communicates the performance of the Company safety program; advises leadership of trends and actions to reduce injuries; provides leadership with information to aid in reduction of incidents and improve safety using data analysis techniques and data extracted from EHS safety software to identify leading and lagging indicator trending. Directs and participates in safety inspections and audits of job sites to ensure compliance with the most updated rules and regulations of federal, state, and local agencies. Provides uniform direction of accepted safety practices throughout the Company and identifies opportunities to promote and recognize safe behavior. Monitors claim investigations and medical reports, and partners with Company claims management personnel, outside adjusters, and legal counsel to ensure successful claims resolutions. Evaluates field and staff training needs and develops employee safety training programs, coaching the safety team to instruct and train employees in the recognition of unsafe conditions, elimination of hazards, specific safe work methods, and the Company's safety policies. Provides leadership to field employees and project managers with hazard analysis and safe work method pre-planning. Oversees DOT regulatory compliance, including driver's qualification files, DOT drug testing and driver safety. Oversees OSHA, MSHA, DOT and other regulatory inspections and related follow-up procedures. Oversees appropriate security clearance and background checks for our employees as required by customers. Provides leadership to major incident responses including incident command, investigation, and media spokesperson responsibilities. Partners with the claims manager to investigate all incidents and identify hazards, training issues, and/or fraudulent claims. Performs Incident Review Meetings following Hurt Model P3-4 and A3-4 events with all participants and leaders to identify facts, determine root causes, and take the appropriate corrective actions. Oversees administration of the Company's drug free workplace policy, including the Company's and all other customer-required testing and implementation protocols. Creates and manages the annual safety financial budget for all operating companies, providing feedback on staffing, training, travel, and professional development expenses as needed. Participates in industry recognition opportunities and represents the Company in industry, labor unions, customer events and other applicable functions to maintain the Company's high-quality reputation for corporate leadership and safety awareness. Consistently makes decisions in an attentive and safe manner to ensure the safety and health of self and others. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in safety, environmental health, construction safety management or a related field. Master's degree preferred. Minimum 7-10 years of experience in building construction safety or medical case management, preferably including electrical construction. Minimum 5 years of experience managing people. Associate Safety Professional (ASP) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) Certification. OSHA 500 Certification; preferred First Aid/CPR/AED Certification. Knowledge of construction and general industry safety standards and procedures, including OSHA, MSHA, DOT, Worker's Compensation, NFPA 70E and pipeline safety rules and regulations. Demonstrated ability to diagnose problems with critical thinking skills and detail orientation, and to drive timely and appropriate solutions with self-initiative and sensitivity. Exceptional leadership, mentoring, listening, presentation, negotiation, conflict management and persuasion skills, and the ability to influence employees at all levels.
