The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) is seeking a Senior Accountant to join the Finance Team. NAEYC is a501(c)(3) professional membership organization with 90+ employees across the United States. NAEYC advances a diverse, dynamic early childhood profession and supports all who care for, educate, and work on behalf of young children. Reporting to the Senior Director of Finance and Accounting, the Senior Accountant will play a crucial role in the building and strengthening of NAEYC's accounting operations. This includes the establishment or refinement of processes, improvement or replacement of software systems, and the retraining and coaching of accounting staff. These innovative advancements will contribute to increasing the integrity and accuracy of NAEYC's financial management and financial statements. Key Responsibilities Lead the month end close process; complete several entries including fixed asset entries, the lease accounting entry, posting of allocations, and the release of restricted revenue; work with all accounting staff to ensure that their transactions are closed, posted, and reconciled in a timely manner. Assist in the production and review of monthly reporting and financial statements. On a weekly basis, review the invoices and expense reports that have been submitted and prepared for payment; provide feedback and guidance to Accounts Payable staff On a monthly basis, download the reports of payments due to NAEYC's State Affiliates; review for accuracy; provide instruction for each affiliate payment On a monthly basis, perform a detailed review of the Accounts Receivable Aging and complete collections action steps when needed Collaborate with Senior Director of Finance and Accounting and department staff to establish efficient and expanded processes and methodology for NAEYC's Chart of General Ledger Accounts, balance sheet reconciliations, tracking Grants and Contributions including the automation of the restricted revenue release. Collaborate with Senior Director of Finance and Accounting to evaluate existing Accounts Payable software (Concur) and provide input and recommendations if a new system will be proposed. Education and Experience Bachelor's degree in Accounting 7-10 years of hands-on accounting experience with increasing responsibilities Actively-licensed CPA, highly preferred Accounting experience in an association or nonprofit, highly preferred Experience with Sage Intacct, highly preferred Experience with Concur, Fonteva, and/or Salesforce, preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Proven working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) Ability to independently research, analyze, and recommend an appropriate course of action on accounting-related matters Excellent communication skills: written, verbal, listening; ability to translate complex accounting processes and rules into lay terms for users Expertise with MSOffice, particularly Excel Motivated, uses thinking skills and initiative to anticipate needs and take action Ability to work independently, to manage time effectively, and to balance priorities Highly organized and very detail-oriented Curious, eager to learn and grow; asks lots of questions to improve understanding Physical Demands There are specific physical demands that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Position Designation: Business Support indicates that the role supports the overall strategic direction of NAEYC, but is not required to travel, have a daily presence in the office, or be called upon in the event of an emergency or crisis.
