Veterinary Medicine Conduct pre-op physical examinations to determine an animal's ability to withstand surgery. Perform up to 35 sterilization surgeries daily for Spay/Neuter Solutionspatients, and shelter animals when requested by the organization. Conduct post-op examinations as necessary to ensure appropriate healing, regardless of where surgery was performed. Make recommendations for care. Review potential causes and areas for improvement regarding surgical procedure. Communicate findings to appropriate practitioner and recurring issues to Director. Inoculate animals and provide recommendations for follow up care. Assist with the evaluation and establishment of disease control and euthanasia protocols for Spay/Neuter Solutions, and assist in implementation of shelter protocols for the Village Adoption center. and clinic. Perform or oversee euthanasia performed within the clinic. Provide "on-call" services for Spay/Neuter Solutions patient post-op concerns when scheduled and during clinic closures. Maintain appropriate licensing and complete required continuing education courses. Adhere to all federal & state laws and regulations, along with organizational Standard Operating Protocols regarding animal care, treatment, advocacy and the mission of the organization. Clinical Operations Responsibilities Oversee controlled drug logs, maintaining DEA requirements. Contribute to the proper care and maintenance of all medical equipment. In coordination with Medical Director and Spay/Neuter Program manager, manage annual budget and promote cost savings within the department. Attend regularly scheduled leadership team meetings, all staff meetings, and other one-on-one meetings as scheduled. Ensure continuity of care for shelter animals through regular, proactive communication about special needs patients with other veterinary staff & Medical Director. Client Service Responsibilities Ensure that quality service is provided to both people and animal clients by the staff of Spay/Neuter Solutions. Assist employees in situations requiring immediate problem solving. Promote good public relations in accordance with Young-Williams' practices. Communicate situations that could be potentially damaging to the professional image of the organization to Medical Director or CEO in a timely manner. Identify issues relating to operations and client service that may adversely affect Young-Williams and communicate to the Medical Director or the appropriate department director. Provide quality service to customers, volunteers, and staff. Represent the organization in a professional and courteous manner at all times. Actively promote spay and neuter and educate clients on responsible animal ownership. Inform clients and constituents of donation opportunities as appropriate, and cultivate relationships with current and potential donors. Operational/Departmental Responsibilities Provide the Spay/Neuter Program Manager with the appropriate information to prepare DVM work schedule to efficiently cover absences. May be asked to work in Village or Mobile Spay/Neuter clinics. Develop treatment protocols and plans for issues that affect the shelter and spay/neuter program in collaboration with the Medical Director and Director of Shelter Operations. Actively supports other departments, staff and volunteers and promotes the development of skills related to the advancement of our goals and mission. May be asked to rotate through other programs being developed by the organization, such as Pets For Life. Participate in Employee Pet Wellness program as scheduled based on requests. Review and update Spay/Neuter program Standard Operating Procedures manual regularly. Serve as a role model for the culture of the organization. Maintain a positive and professional attitude. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY Assist with providing day-to-day supervision of medical care and procedures performed by veterinary support staff to ensure compliance with safety and personnel practices and procedures. Identify issues and address with the Spay Neuter Program Manager or Medical Director. Maintain regular and effective communication with staff through various methods to ensure the smooth coordination of the medical functions of the clinic. Provide staff performance feedback to Spay Neuter Program Manager and Medical Director for use in annual review process. Work cooperatively to orient, train and supervise new and existing employees. WORK ENVIRONMENT/ EQUIPMENT USE Indoors in a high noise air-conditioned/heated building, outdoors at shelter or on-location for various activities. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as PC, printer, copy machine, fax machine, filing cabinets, telephone, as well as cleaning equipment and supplies. PHYSICAL/MENTAL/SENSORY DEMANDS The demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee must be able to lift 40 pounds by themselves, or occasionally lift or move up to 100 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Regular exposure to animals and their bodily fluids, cleaning chemicals, fumes, dust, bites, and scratches. Duties are performed indoors in a high noise air-conditioned/heated building, outdoors at the shelter, or on-location for various activities. Must use self-care skills to combat compassion fatigue. POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK This is a full-time position. Work hours may vary and evening, weekend, and holiday hours will be required. Shared on-call responsibilities (via phone). TRAVEL Some travel may be required for continuing education or to meet the needs of the organization's other 2 clinical areas. This would be arranged in advance. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent required. Licensure in Tennessee, or eligibility to obtain licensure within reasonable time after hiring. Require 2 years of shelter medicine, general small animal practice, or HQHVSN or 1 year internship or additional training in shelter medicine or a graduate degree in a related field (public health, epidemiology) Supervisory or management and customer service experience is preferred. Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook is required, and experience with database software administration and reporting is strongly preferred. SKILLS AND PROFICIENCIES Positive, optimistic outlook. Ability to handle multiple tasks in a busy workplace environment.
