The Financial Analyst is a key resource in reporting and providing critical analyses of the New England Aquarium's financial performance for the Finance and Executive Leadership team. As part of the Financial Planning and Analysis team this position will collaborate with business leaders and various teams across the organization to help analyze and communicate key drivers for the company's financial results. This role will provide financial reporting and business metrics to executive management. This role requires an understanding of corporate finance, a keen interest in learning about the business, a strong analytical mindset, and the ability to contribute to the process of making sound business decisions. This is a full-time regular position offering a comprehensive benefits package. The schedule will be Monday-Friday 9:00 am - 5:00 pm with the option for a hybrid schedule, working some days on-site and some days remotely. Remote days are only available for residents of MA, RI, NH, ME, NY and VT. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Assist with the management and development of the annual budget process and prepare the annual operating budget package for issuance to department managers, monitor department managers' submissions, participate in budget assumption reviews and departmental changes. Ensure individual department budgets and the overall consolidated results for the organization to ensure budget information is input correctly into the general ledger system. Produce monthly reporting and analytical support to measure performance of annual goals and initiatives. Build clear, accurate and reliable predictive forecast models to project longer-term financial results of the business to help analyze and explain budget and forecast variances of the overall financial results. Analyze historical data to identify trends to develop recommendations for investment and/or cost reduction decisions. Assist in the quarterly forecasting and annual budget process while partnering with leadership to ensure delivery of targets dates and strong financial results. Identify key data sources and use data-driven insights to support decision making across the organization. Build and maintain financial models to measure the business and provide financial reporting and analysis on financial results including cash flow information. Identify opportunities for process improvement and standardization of key financial metrics for development of financial scorecards and dashboards. Collaborate with business leaders, finance, and accounting teams to help analyze, align, and report key business drivers. Develop forecasts and build annual operating budgets using historical financial trends and analysis. Make recommendations to management based on in-depth analysis. Provide ad-hoc financial analysis and modeling to promote and communicate key elements of the various financial milestones for the organization. Prepare various reports for the Budget & Administration Committee, Board of Directors and Committee on Strategic Priorities meetings. Capital Expenditures: Responsible for analyzing additions and dispositions made during the year for corresponding capital projects codes to determine assets placed in or removed from service. Calculate and book monthly depreciation and amortization journal entries that accurately reflect new fixed asset additions being put into service. Assist in preparing certain fixed asset schedules and reconciliations for the year-end audit. QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Training and Experience Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance. 3 to 5 years of accounting and financial analysis professional experience is required. Proficient knowledge of GAAP & FASB and a solid understanding of accounts receivable and general ledger accounting. Familiarity with non-profit G/L accounting (MIP) and Fundraising (Raisers Edge) systems preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, computerized GL, and other business systems. Advanced knowledge of Excel and spreadsheet design techniques is essential. Strong financial modeling skills and knowledge of financial reporting and cash flow information. Excellent technical and communication skills; must be comfortable presenting findings and recommendations to a variety of audiences. Working knowledge of income statements, statements of cash flow, and balance sheets, as well as a strong understanding of how business decisions will affect each is required. Demonstrated ability to provide oversight and enhancements for point-of-sale ticketing systems, budget systems, and purchasing systems is preferred. Working knowledge of grants management as it relates to the compliance and reporting of government, corporate, and foundation grants preferred. Good communication skills (oral and written) with a strong customer service orientation.
