Position Summary: This position is an opportunity for a curious and equity-minded person to become a member of the Museum's Learning and Research Department, which seeks to use research , evaluati o n , and professional development to advance the Museum's mission of providing innovative and inclusive museum experiences that inspire kindness, joy, creativity, and curiosity for all learners . The department builds applied knowledge that fosters just, equitable , diverse, accessible, and inclusive (JED AI) practice in the design of learning environments (exhibits, programs, etc.) and broader systems . The Manager will demonstrate leadership, independently lead projects, manage youth researchers, and work collaboratively with museum colleagues , external partners, and children, youth, and families to support the Department's work . Supervisory Responsibilities : The Learning and Research Manager will supervise Learning & Research team members, including youth researchers, interns, or other part-time or seasonal staff. Essential Job Functions : Leadership: Builds culture and relationships, inspires deep and meaningful work, and contributes to the ongoing planning about how the Department can better serve the Museum's mission and commitment to JEDAI. Nurtures a team culture that emphasizes growth, belonging, JEDAI, and pride in conducting our work with high standards befitting the Museum's bold vision of transforming education. Works with the Director of Learning and Research to maintain a balanced workload and proactively plan the team's upcoming work in ways that serve our colleagues' and communities' needs and support the Museum's mission. Engages in ideation with department members; engages with colleagues, clients, and partners to brainstorm project ideas; creates logic models; develops project plans; and contributes to grant writing or other fundraising efforts as needed. Collaboration : Builds and maintains positive relationships with a diverse network of collaborators, clients, partners, and community members to understand their needs and proactively support a mission-aligned and data-informed culture in the Museum and beyond. Represents the Learning & Research Department as a curious, kind, and creative person who fosters joyful, research-informed, and JEDAI-minded practice. Demonstrates a service-mindedness and willingness to support colleagues and partners. This includes periodically contributing to educational programming, engaging in annual Museum cleaning activities, and other needs that arise. Independently leads projects that facilitate learning, inquiry, and professional development about various topics in informal learning, design, maker education, JEDAI, and more, including multiple grant-funded initiatives. Project management: Creates and implements project management tools including project timelines, budgets, and to-do lists. Manages communication with collaborators, clients, and partners to foster positive relationships, manage expectations, and ensure the work meets their needs. Coordinates project activities, such as planning meetings and events, scheduling data collection sessions with participants, purchasing supplies, and managing reimbursements. Data collection and analysis : Determines appropriate data collection approaches for projects when needed. This may include selecting and adapting existing tools or developing culturally appropriate data collection instruments including surveys, interview questions, focus group protocols, observation forms, photo voice protocols, embedded data collection, and arts-based or other activities. Gathers data through a range of data collection approaches, as described above. Manages data with rigorous attention to detail and adherence to ethical research standards, including data entry and cleaning, coding of qualitative data, descriptive quantitative data analysis, organization, and storage. Professional development and research dissemination: Contributes to the planning and leading of professional development activities that extend the Museum's mission and Department's learning with adult learners. Writes and proofreads written materials including reports, articles, and resources for educators and other professionals such as research briefs, toolkits, and curricula. Presents at conferences, on webinars, and in meetings. Develops creative dissemination products such as games, infographics, social media posts, podcasts, and other things that help make the Museum's research relevant and accessible to a broader audience. Ethics : Conducts work with attention to the ethical features of research and education. Manages appropriate consent/assent from participants. Produces Institutional Review Board (IRB) documentation and adheres to IRB activities as needed. Youth supervision : Recruits and supervises a diverse team of youth researchers and interns. Mentors, assigns tasks, and gives feedback to youth in a constructive and collaborative manner. Fosters a positive team culture and professional environment that nurtures learning through authentic work experiences. Plans the ways youth can meaningfully contribute to projects and develop their skills. Clearly communicates project information and tracking progress with both youth and adult collaborators. Facilitation of staff co-researchers : Coordinates and mentors Museum staff who are engaged in research and evaluation activities. Facilitates group conversations and activities; co-planning projects; and supporting projects to progress on appropriate timelines. Job Qualifications: Education: Bachelor's degree or higher. Relevant experience can be an appropriate substitute for educational background. Experience: 4+ years of experience in a research, evaluation, or education setting is required (this could include participation in an academic program). Prior work or volunteer experience in an informal learning or arts and culture context is preferred. Experience working with marginalized youth is required. Prior management experience is preferred. Demonstrated experience working productively on collaborative projects is required. Demonstrated commitment to JEDAI, shown through experience identifying and taking steps to address inequities, is required. Prior exposure to anti-racist, disability justice, equitable, culturally-responsive, transformative, humanizing, participatory, or related approaches is strongly preferred. Prior experience gathering, managing, and analyzing data is required. Experience with applied mixed-methods research or evaluation is preferred. Skills: Demonstrates high levels of leadership, creativity, integrity, and flexibility while enacting principles of JEDAI throughout their work. Management/supervision skills. Able to work independently while also being a strong collaborator. Commitment to ongoing self-reflection and continued learning. Proficiency working with people of all ages from diverse races, ethnicities, genders, abilities, and other backgrounds. Ability to tailor communication style (written and verbal) to be culturally responsive for various audiences. Leadership skills exemplified by initiative and organization. Skilled in conducting learning and research projects. Flexible thinking and ability to adjust expectations and actions as needed. Physical Requirements, and Equipment Usage: Moderate physical effort including physical and mental stamina necessary in interacting with people for long periods of time. Some lifting and moving of furniture, equipment and supplies is required. Frequently lift or carry under 30 lbs., occasionally lift up to 50 lbs. Move consistently about the Museum and off-site attending to programmatic needs. Assistance may be available when needed. The physical demands and work environment characteristics are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job. Work Environment, Hours of Work, and Travel Requirements: Duties will be performed in a museum environment, which includes interaction with the public and exposure to children and families. This is a full-time role, with occasional work on weekends and evening for events required. The position requires that the employee be based in or near Pittsburgh, PA, as many of the collaborative elements of this position's duty require on-site work. Some flexibility with remote work may be possible when job duties allow. This position requires regional travel and may require national travel as approved by the Director of Learning and Research. Clearances: FBI fingerprints, PA Child Abuse History Certificate (Act 33) and PA State Criminal Record Check (Act 34) Clearances are required.
