Organist & Assistant Director of Traditional Music Job Description: A&M UMC seeks to provide and enable the highest possible standard in sacred music. We seek to help people grow in their discipleship of Jesus Christ through the church's Music Ministry. The church has recently invested in this dimension of our worship by installing a newly built 70-rank Peragallo Pipe Organ and renovating the sanctuary to enhance acoustics for music. The Organist/Assistant Director of Music is to assist the Director of Music in leading all age-level music ministries inside and outside of worship and accompany the ensembles on the piano and organ as needed. The Organist/Assistant Director of Music will be called on to conduct, coordinate, teach, and develop musicians. This position reports directly to the Director of Music Ministries. Responsibilities Serve as organist/pianist weekly in two traditional worship services as well as in worship for all Christian holidays. Work closely with the Director of Music Ministries to plan and select appropriate music for worship services, including special services such as Christmas, Easter, weddings, and funerals. Direct the adult handbell choir and manage the maintenance of instruments, budget, and library for the ensemble. Direct and rehearse with various music ensembles as needed, including adult, youth, and children’s choirs and Music Makers, a yearly music camp for elementary-age children. Collaborate with clergy, musicians, and church staff to integrate music ministry effectively into the church's overall mission. Assist the Director of Music Ministries in the planning and execution of the Ministry’s weekly operation and special events, such as special concerts, including yearly events such as Lessons and Carols, an Annual Messiah performance, and Christmas and Easter masterwork performances. Organize and lead music for Funerals/Weddings along with the Director of Music. Additional compensation will be provided for these events. Coordinate with the Director of Music and orchestra contractor to hire exceptional ensembles/orchestras for major celebrations or events. Assist the Director of Music Ministries in developing and implementing strategies to expand the music ministry's scope and impact, including community outreach and engagement. Mentor and provide guidance to emerging musicians in the congregation, including the management of the choral intern program. Attend weekly sta? and worship planning meetings. Qualifications: Master of Music degree in Organ Performance preferred. Demonstrated excellence in organ performance. Familiarity with a wide range of church music, including traditional hymns, gospel, and contemporary Christian music, with a deep understanding of Methodist worship traditions. Experience in choir accompaniment and a solid ability to read music and sight-read. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with clergy, church staff, choir members, and the congregation. Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and some evenings, for special services and events. A commitment to the Christian faith and a deep understanding of the role of music in worship.
