DepartmentMOLECULAR GENETICS (IN-MOLG-IUINA) Department InformationOne of the first human genetics departments in the country, the Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics at IU School of Medicine has a rich history of training geneticists and genetic counselors and providing genetic consultation and counseling services. The department contributes to the understanding of numerous genetic conditions through the integration of basic research in genetic and genomic mechanisms, translational research in disease models, and clinical trials in rare and common genetic diseases.Job SummaryResearch within the lab focuses upon the differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells into various neural lineage cells for in vitro disease modeling. As such, candidates for this position will conduct a wide range of experiments in cellular reprogramming to generate new lines of induced pluripotent stem cells, as well as differentiation into neurons, astrocytes, and microglia. This laboratory is under the direction of Principle Investigator, Jason Meyer, PhD.Department-Specific Responsibilities Performs complex techniques or procedures such as: Cell culture (human stem cell lines), including cellular reprogramming and astrocyte differentiation. Cell biology (ex. flow cytometry & histology). Microscopy (ex. confocal and multiphoton microscopy). Molecular biology (ex. DNA and RNA, including cloning). Gene editing (CRISPR/Cas9). Performs regulatory procedures/protocols (ex. IACUC, IRB, chemical safety, radiation safety, and controlled substances). Responsible for technical archiving. Provides training (ex. techniques, equipment use, and analysis) to research technicians, post docs, graduate students, and/or undergraduate students. Serves as a resource to other laboratory personnel. Participates in the tabulation and computation of project results. Prepares project research reports and conducts analyses of performed experiments. Communicates with collaborators to facilitate transfer of data, samples, and other materials. Performs a wide variety of complex experiments and reports results. Keeps organized analytical data of performed experiments. Provides support for equipment maintenance as needed. Acts as a liaison to students and laboratory personnel for training. May train junior-level staff. Provides guidance and support to junior-level staff. Helps plan experiments or short-term goals. General Responsibilities Leads research activities and protocol development. Maintains equipment, including preventive maintenance, scheduling repairs as needed, service agreement negotiations, trouble shooting equipment malfunctions, and maintaining an active list of vendors to respond to equipment loss. Supervises, mentors, and provides training for junior-level staff. Prepares summary data reports, and creates and maintains databases for storage and analysis. Ensures compliance with all applicable local and federal regulations. May design and conduct a wide range of complex experiments.QualificationsCombinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education. EDUCATIONRequired Bachelor's degree in a science related field.Preferred Master's degree in a sciences related field.WORK EXPERIENCERequired 3 years of laboratory research experience.SKILLSRequired Proficient communication skills. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts.
