Job description The Search and Evaluation Senior Director, is a key role in AstraZeneca's Vaccines and Immune (V&I) Therapy group, where the role holder supports global business development initiatives and has a direct impact on the scientific strategy and portfolio. The role holder is responsible for driving search efforts of external innovation across academia, biotech and peer pharma and conducting scientific evaluation of opportunities, and as appropriate, presenting attractive opportunities to the business effectively and efficiently (these may be in-licensing, product partnering, acquisition and strategic academic alliances). The Search and Evaluation Senior Director, will work collaboratively with the Head of V&I Business Development/Transaction Director within AstraZeneca's Business Development Operations group throughout the deal process, and will lead in the early part of the deal process, prioritizing external opportunities in line with the V&I strategy, driving forward scientific evaluations and the development and presentation of cases for senior management briefings, to the point of making a decision to purse an opportunity into the offer and due diligence phase.The successful candidate will have a strong scientific R&D and/or clinical background in vaccines, antibodies, and infectious diseases, business and strategic savvy and excellent communication skills, both written and oral. In addition, an ability to engage and collaborate across boundaries with an entrepreneurial demeanor by acting with urgency and agility. Must be able to lead a wide range of projects and engage with prospective partners. The role holder will form and lead cross-functional teams to evaluate opportunities. This role requires excellent judgement and decision-making skills to take ownership for making recommendations for progressing and terminating evaluations and opportunities. Major Duties and Responsibilities: Establish the strategy and priorities for V&I Search and Evaluation activities on behalf of the V&I Therapy Area Leadership team (TALT), based on a deep understanding of the Therapy Area strategy and external scientific innovation and competitive insights in infectious disease. Responsible for search and evaluation of all V&I in-licensing opportunities and strategic alliances with academia, biotechs and peer-pharma including early research projects, new modality platforms for V&I, early and late clinical stage opportunities, in addition to prioritizing partnering opportunities and responding promptly to external potential partners. Responsible for leading evaluations, developing business cases, and integrating input through leadership of cross-functional teams to create high quality, clear and concise cross functional assessments of external assets for the V&I Senior Leadership team and other senior stakeholders up to the Senior Executive Team (SET). Identify technical, regulatory, and commercial risks and opportunities within each individual proposition and make clear recommendations to senior management to progress or to close. Lead the relationship with the potential partner/institution in the initial and evaluation phase on behalf of V&I and AZ in a timely and professional manner. Work collaboratively with the due diligence lead to ensure that the due diligence team are briefed on the opportunity and to help put the due diligence findings into perspective. Work collaboratively with the Head of V&I Business Development/Transaction Director, to prepare and present deal and alliance propositions to relevant governance bodies focusing on the transaction strategic fit and deal rationale to help support completion of transactions with BD teams in a timely manner. Represent the Business Development strategy at external partnering meetings and to identify and triage external assets and opportunities related to V&I. Best represent AstraZeneca's scientific excellence through a deep understanding of the portfolio and ensure AZ and V&I is considered a partner of choice. Track breakthrough innovation, ongoing clinical trials and market trends of existing external V&I opportunities and build and maintain a strong external network of prospective partners and academic institutions with regular interactions. Work as part of the Early V&I LT and V&I Leaders Council (VILC), coaching and mentoring colleagues in areas of expertise and acting as a role model for the AZ values. Education: MD or PhD with 8+ years of experience. Requirements and Qualifications: Extensive deal experience and proven foundation of general BD practices and approaches. Experience in alliance management and academic partnerships. Strong scientific background with knowledge of vaccines, antibodies, drugs and clinical development in infectious diseases and technology platforms enabling vaccine/antibody development and delivery. Strong analytical skills and ability to ascertain the relevant issues from technical information provided by functional authorities. Extensive experience in leading multi-functional project teams of senior professionals. Strong interpersonal and team leadership skills, demonstrating flexibility, proven track record to deal with complexity under time pressure. Excellent communication and influencing skills across multiple internal and external collaborator groups. Experience and effectiveness in presentations of business cases to the most senior management. Ability to think critically, creatively and to anticipate and solve problems. Ability to navigate and be successful in a fast-paced, highly matrixed work environment.
