JOB SUMMARY Gerlach Crew Heavy Equipment Crew will participate in the general construction and event logistics of The 360. Project aspects will include heavy equipment operations such as dirt work, loading/unloading shipping containers, etc. Other points of the position involve carpentry, noxious weed abatement, painting, and manual labor. This crew member must be an experienced heavy equipment operator with the ability to operate a fixed mast forklift (Hyster 360) and a variable reach forklift in off-road applications. This is a temporary, full-time , non-exempt role, based in Gerlach, NV running from July to September , 2024. The deadline to apply for this role is 5:00 pm Pacific on May 17th, 2024. DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Construction & Logistics (50%) Work collaboratively as a crew member on the setup of The 360. Duties include: creating shade structures, leveling the earth, constructing and installing signage, and other projects as directed. Perform manual labor as instructed. Help to maintain the general environment and overall security, organization, and functionality of The 360. This could include working on or actively maintaining: power, fuel, water, waste systems, structures, shops, tools, and miscellaneous storage. Assist in the set-up and breakdown of an on-site workshop where the construction will be taking place. Establish and maintain a clean and safe worksite while utilizing the necessary OSHA approved safety equipment. Heavy Equipment Operation (40%) Operate heavy equipment in compliance with the Burning Man Project’s operating safety policies and procedures. Provide recommendations for maintaining and improving environmental performance. Load and unload equipment, containers, and pallets from vehicles and trailers. Ensure equipment, material, and the work site are maintained, kept clean, and stored safely. Perform inspections of heavy equipment each day of use. Complete any organizationally required training as necessary. Serve as an example of safe and responsible conduct on site. Properly and respectfully use a radio to communicate for work operations. Other Functions and Responsibilities (10%) Be familiar with and act in accordance with Burning Man’s staff policies. Abide by the rules and codes of conduct described in the Nevada Operations Manual, NVO Handbook, and Ranch Protocols. Maintain an accurate record to track work hours performed Be willing to communicate through slack for work purposes (instructions, information, changes in plans, etc) Other tasks as assigned. LEARNING AND TEACHING Learning – Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes. QUALIFICATIONS Able to relocate to Gerlach, Nevada, for the entirety of the contract (June - October 2022). Experience (2+ years) in heavy machinery operation, specifically fixed mast and variable reach fork - especially rough terrain. Experience (1+ years) in general construction/handyman. Knowledge of and experience with power tools, including table saw, Skilsaw, miter saw, jigsaw, and angle grinder. Ability to work with awareness and clear communication in a production environment. Experienced and comfortable with using 2 way radios. A team player who is also able to work independently. Abide by the rules and codes of conduct described in the NVO Handbook, Ranch Protocols, and the 360 S.O.P. Preferred It is helpful if the candidate has previously been to Burning Man and/or is familiar with its culture. First-Aid knowledge. Experience working in remote wilderness and/or desert environments. OSHA 10 Note: If you have gained the necessary experience to succeed in this role and have acquired this experience in other ways, we encourage you to apply and share all relevant experience in your application. REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS Valid driver’s license and a good driving record. Must be certified in using fixed mast and variable reach forklifts. An experienced candidate lacking certification may qualify for on-the-job training and certification through Burning Man Project. COMPENSATION: Individual compensation decisions are dependent on a variety of factors, including prior experience and geographical location. The anticipated pay rate for this position is $15.50 to $18.00 per hour . PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT Off-playa: Work is not primarily sedentary in nature. This position requires periods of heavy lifting, bending, kneeling, squatting, and climbing. This position will be physically demanding and requires individuals with good physical health and endurance. Work will include the need to find and meet with department representatives who may not be in the vicinity therefore, this could include walking or using some form of transportation. Much of the work will be in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.
