Starting hourly wage : $18.00/per hour +DOE This is a full-time, temporary position from May 29, 2024 - July 16, 2024 (with the week of July 4th off). General Statement of Duties Conduct outdoor education programming focused on field science and responsible recreation, specifically at Lake Lowell Park in Nampa and the adjacent Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge. Classification Summary Canoe Science Camp Program staff serve as field instructors and canoe guides for summer Canoe Science Camps at Lake Lowell Park in Nampa. Work is conducted in an outdoor setting teaching children about hydrology, ecology, environmental science, biology, local history, boating (emphasis on paddle sports), boating safety, and recreation; and assist with curriculum design and program logistics. Examples of Work (Illustrative Only) Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Teach and supervise groups of children at Lake Lowell; Provide instruction in outdoor recreation skills, including hiking, canoeing and Leave No Trace principles; Provide outdoor science education; design and teach lessons focused on STEM topics including but not limited to: hydrology, ecology, biology and environmental science; Manage program logistics, including daily set-up, check-in and check-out of participants, and care and storage of program equipment; Assist Parks staff in program design, planning and preparation; Prepare and deliver science- and recreation-based outdoor programming to groups of children; Maintain risk management and safety for program participants. Other Duties and Responsibilities Perform other related duties as assigned. Acceptable Experience and Training High school diploma or GED equivalency required, college education preferred; Strong background in outdoor education, natural resources, environmental sciences, biology or a related field; Prior outdoor education and/or leadership experience; Prior experience working with children in an outdoor setting; Comfortable paddling and steering a canoe, and providing canoeing instruction to groups of children; Background in lesson planning, curriculum design, or educational programming preferred. Special Qualifications Current CPR/First Aid/AED Certification or willingness and ability to obtain certification required; Must successfully complete a background investigation; Valid driver’s license required. Essential Physical Abilities Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions and communicate effectively on the telephone and in person; Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions and review, prepare, and organize documents and files; Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate a personal computer and standard and specialized office equipment; Sufficient personal mobility, agility, strength, and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, that permits the employee to lift up to 50 pounds, walk up to 2 miles, and work in a primarily outdoor setting; Sufficient personal mobility, agility, strength, and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, to walk, stand, bend, stoop, kneel, climb, and paddle a recreational canoe in a sometimes-repetitive motion for up to six (6) consecutive hours in a shift; Sufficient personal mobility, agility, strength, and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, to operate a motor vehicle in a safe manner and in compliance with Idaho and Federal laws and County policy; Sufficient personal mobility, agility, strength, and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, to operate machinery, work in outdoor conditions, including in climate weather and fluctuating temperatures.
