Job Title: Community Instructor: Charlotte Department: Community Programs Reports To: Charlotte Program Manager FLSA Status: Part-Time, Non-Exempt Location: Charlotte, North Carolina Supervision: None Anticipated Start Date: Rolling Start Last Updated: March 2024 Organizational Summary: Since 1967, North Carolina Outward Bound School (NCOBS) has delivered challenging wilderness adventures that teach more than outdoor skills. Our wilderness courses, from the mountains of North Carolina to the shores of south Florida to the peaks of South America, deliver on our mission “to change lives through challenge and discovery.” Essential Functions: Instruct various experiential education programs designed to create community, belonging, collaboration, reflection and leadership for student and adult populations including hiking and ground initiatives in regional parks. Participate in course planning, including the development and implementation of curricula and course logistics. Structure a safe, inclusive and fun learning environment while continuously monitoring risk and adjusting program components accordingly. Sequence activities that are appropriate for the group based on the assessment of group skills. Facilitate and Instruct Outward Bound Professional programs along with a Senior Facilitator. Support organizational equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts across NCOBS and within all community programs. Duties and Responsibilities: A strong commitment to educational equity. Experience facilitating youth programming in a variety of outdoor and indoor settings; experience with nonprofits serving youth is strongly desired. Proven communicator in oral and written platforms. Ability to speak clearly and persuasively in positive or challenging situations. Comfortable presenting to large groups. Strong safety management experience. Able to manage multiple priorities in real-time while managing and resolving individual and group behavioral needs with a variety of tools. Experience with diversity, equity, and inclusion work and a proven commitment to continuing to make experiential education available to all communities. Proficient in Office365 (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams) and video conferencing. Relates well to others and works efficiently with a variety of people. Working knowledge of initiatives and teambuilding. Desire to improve facilitation skills, give and receive feedback, and actively carry out support duties. Working Conditions: Must be located in the Charlotte Region Some travel to Asheville, NC, Western North Carolina and throughout the Southeast may be required. Employees will be responsible for their own travels to and from program locations.5% regional travel; Travel to base camps as required. This includes overnight stays ranging from 1-5 days. Irregular work hours, as necessary. Qualifications: Outdoor, traditional and/or experiential education experience preferred. Wilderness First Aid and CPR. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, use hands to handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear. Compensation and Benefits: Compensation is in competitive to regional and non-profit comparable organizations This position is paid at a per diem rate of $140/day. Travel expenses outside of the Charlotte region are reimbursed.
