Job Summary: The University of Wisconsin-Madison's Division of Facilities Planning & Management (FP&M) is recruiting for a Safety Specialist to join the Department of Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S). Under the direction of the People & Building Safety Manager, the Safety Specialist is responsible for building and fostering a safety culture on campus. This includes providing guidance, assistance, and training to UW employees, faculties, staff, and customers. This position will be also responsible for reviewing and investigating incidents that occur on the UW-Madison campus and associated facilities. This position plays an important role in identifying safety issues, developing improvement plans and procedures, and providing guidance to internal and external stakeholders including leadership in specialized areas.FP&M is a full-spectrum service organization that builds, maintains, and operates the physical environment of UW-Madison in support of the university's education, research, and outreach activities. We are responsible for everything from the building projects that change the face of campus to the flowers that beautify the grounds. Responsibilities: Identifies and develops plans to address safety issues, provides consultation, and tracks and manages cases in a specific area of specialty so all work, recreation, and research can be performed safely and in compliance will all applicable federal, state, and local regulations and standards. Makes recommendations for the control of identified hazards and assesses hazards using relevant regulatory methodologies. 10% Secures resources and schedules logistics for a safety program 25% Identifies operational and safety issues and develops improvement plans and standard operating procedures 25% Provides knowledge and guidance to internal and external stakeholders including leadership, in a specialized area of safety such biosafety, chemical, hazardous materials, agriculture, lake, radiation, and Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) 5% Directs logistical activities, allocates resources and investigates components of specific health and safety cases 10% Communicates findings to necessary stakeholders 5% Reviews industry updates and may assist in developing safety communication materials based on industry changes 15% Work with campus groups to build and foster a safety culture. This includes providing guidance, assistance and training in order to comply with laws, regulations and generally accepted best work practices 5% Review and/or investigate incidents occurring on UW campus and associated facilities. Occasional nights may be required; advance notice would be provided.Typical Work Schedule:Monday-Friday, 7:45 am - 4:30 pm Appointment Type, Duration: Ongoing/Renewable Salary: Minimum $60,000 ANNUAL (12 months)Depending on QualificationsThe starting salary for the position is $60,000 but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.Employees in this position can expect to receive benefits such as generous vacation, holidays, and paid time off; competitive insurances and savings accounts; retirement benefits.
