Protected redwood forests, scaled restoration, and a landscape of responsibly managed working forests are critical investments in forest health and sustainability. By maximizing the climate resilience, biodiversity, tribal engagement, and community benefit of this globally unique ecosystem, The League believes that California can lead a new worldwide era of forest stewardship and climate resilience. The League is embarking on a Centennial Vision for Redwoods Conservation that will double the size of the protected coastal redwood forest, put young forests on the path to becoming old-growth at a landscape scale, restore the natural fire resilience of the Giant Sequoia, and connect people to these magical places through magnificent parks. Realizing this vision will require everyone who loves the redwoods to get behind this ambitious effort. Position Overview: Join Save the Redwoods League as a Paralegal and embark on a journey of profound impact. The Paralegal will be responsible for assisting with contracts management, governance, Legal Department file setup and management, trust and estate management, real estate closings, drafting correspondence, etc. . As the primary custodian of legal requests, file management, and processes, you will serve as the pivotal legal liaison for our entire organization. This position will primarily center on meticulous organization and file management, ensuring our legal operations run seamlessly. Qualifications: Five or more years of paralegal experience with a focus on commercial contracts, land transactions, and legal research Strong verbal and written communication skills High accuracy and attention to detail Analytical and issue-spotting abilities Proficiency in Word, Excel, Outlook, and document management software Experience with contracts/governance and supporting general counsel and company-wide departments Competence in online legal research platforms, preferably Westlaw and Checkpoint Familiarity with researching federal, state, and regulatory agency codes, regulations, and guidelines Ability to approach challenges with a sense of ownership, enthusiasm, and innovation in a collaborative team setting. Experience in trust and estate law, with a strong understanding of legal principles and procedures related to estate planning, probate, and trust administration. Experience with workflow contract management software. Essential Duties and Job Functions: Acting as department admin - being the initial point of contact for legal questions, providing calendar support, processing invoices. Manages contracts approval process and document management for the organization. Coaches and trains staff on process as needed. Insures proper filing and document management. Manages legal documents. Establishes and maintains a filing system architecture for key documents related to legal, contract and board governance. Provides research and legal support to legal processes on topics such as: real estate transactions, trust and estates, and board/non-profit governance. Acts as point person for insurance renewals. Support full organization for all legal file requests Ensure legal request and legal processes are being followed correctly and coach team members on legal processes as needed. Take ownership of file management including organizing and streamlining the legal share point drive. Perform legal research as needed. Review board resolutions and research historical organizational resolutions. Assist legal team with administrative duties such as calendaring and general organization duties. Billing and invoicing including correctly coding invoices and submitting to finance for approval. Insurance billing and renewal file management Educational Requirements: The California Business and Professions Code, Section6450 (c) states: A paralegal shall possess at least one of the following: (1) A certificate of completion of a paralegal program approved by the American Bar Association . (2) A certificate of completion of a paralegal program at, or a degree from, a postsecondary institution that requires the successful completion of a minimum of 24 semester, or equivalent, units in law-related courses and that has been accredited by a national or regional accrediting organization or approved by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education. (3) A baccalaureate degree or an advanced degree in any subject, a minimum of one year of law-related experience under the supervision of an attorney who has been an active member of the State Bar of California for at least the preceding three years or who has practiced in the federal courts of this state for at least the preceding three years, and a written declaration from this attorney stating that the person is qualified to perform paralegal tasks. (4) A high school diploma or general equivalency diploma, a minimum of three years of law-related experience under the supervision of an attorney who has been an active member of the State Bar of California for at least the preceding three years or who has practiced in the federal courts of this state for at least the preceding three years, and a written declaration from this attorney stating that the person is qualified to perform paralegal tasks. This experience and training shall be completed no later than December 31, 2003. Desirable qualifications: Direct experience in nonprofit: administration, including governance, regulatory compliance, and corporate record-keeping Work Schedule: This role is hybrid with a minimum of 1-2 days onsite per week. For the first 3 months paralegals will be onsite more frequently for training. After 3 months, our weekly firm-day is Tuesday (when everyone living in the SF Bay Area is required to come in). Additional days are based on business needs. Direct Reports: None Compensation and Benefits As a full-time exempt employee, you will be eligible for full benefits which includes medical, dental,and vision insurance, three weeks of vacation annually plus holidays, and a 403(b) retirement plan, currently with an up to 8% company match. We offer competitive salaries commensurate with experience; the hiring range for this position is $80,000-100,000 per year.
