The Research Assistant will be responsible for maintaining the laboratory and performing research related activities within the University of Iowa Stead Family Department of Pediatrics, Division of Medical Genetics and Genomics. This position will provide support by performing administrative duties related to ordering lab supplies, maintenance and organization of protocols and documents, remaining in compliance with various standard operating procedures and requirements, and conducting neuroscience research related to gene discovery in rare inherited hematological and neurological disorders, performing functional modeling of disease using molecular experiments involving induced pluripotent stem cells(iPSC) and gene editing technologies, coordinating patient recruitment, maintaining rare disease biorepository and registry, collecting and organizing data, and analyzing results. This is a specified term position.We intend to hire for one position at either the Research Associate, requisition #24002445, or Research Assistant, requisition #24001754, based on the qualifications of the successful candidate. Duties to include: * Perform research activities based upon protocols developed by other research staff or principal investigator of the research project. * Read and understand protocols; as individual skills develop, troubleshoot, and propose modifications to existing protocols or develop new protocols with other researchers or principal investigator. * Plan and perform experimental procedures assuring fidelity to protocols. * Carry out molecular biology techniques, including immunohistochemistry, DNA and RNA extraction and purification, PCR, gel electrophoresis, Western Blot, and basic bioinformatics. * Collect, record, organize, and as skills develop, analyze, data. * Assist with procurement of lab supplies and materials. * Organize and maintain protocols and administrative documents. * Develop and monitor quality control testing of equipment as necessary. * May train, provide direction, assignments, and feedback to other employees. Our medical genetics team collaborates with state and federal agencies, educators, researchers, support groups and others to provide the latest information and treatment options for Iowans and their families.Required Qualifications: * Bachelor's degree in science, engineering or a related field OR equivalent combination of education and related laboratory experience. * Excellent verbal and written communication skills. * Minimum of 3 months in molecular biology experiments, sterile technique, tissue culture, passaging and freezing cells. * Demonstrated excellent organizational skills. * Minimum of 6 months experience in data analysis and presentation. * Knowledge in gene transcription, protein translation, RNA splicing and the regulation of gene expression. * Previous experience with clinical research. Desired Qualifications * Experience in cell-based screening assays such as ELISA, luciferase, fluorescence, and Western blotting. * Experience in primer design and RT-PCR/qPCR protocols * Prior experience in statistics, computer programming, or coding in R or a related language. * Knowledge of Institutional Review Board Procedures. * Experience with cell culture including iPSC handling and genome editing technologies. * Experience with plasmid preps and gene subcloning, and primer design. Highly Desired Qualifications: * Master's degree in a related field is highly desired. * 6 months experience in microscopy, cell culture, or iPSC handling and maintenance is highly desirable. * Basic microbiology skills such as handling E.Coli for plasmid experiments, streaking for isolation, and preservation of microbes. * Demonstrated experience with gene editing using CRISPR, TALENs and ZFNs. * Experience handling adenoviruses, AAV and lentivirus. * Previous experience with creating or using REDCap databases is highly desirable.
