NATURE OF WORK: Assist the bus driver in providing safe and punctual transportation service to and from the Head Start center. Observe and monitor behavior of students. Support the driver in emergency situations by providing orderly evacuation (if necessary), calming the children, and supervising the children (if driver is occupied with emergency medical/law enforcement assistance). Interact with parents and staff to promote the wellbeing of the children. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES : Assist children with safely boarding and exiting the bus. Assist driver in completion of daily sign on and off sheets, accounting by name all children who boarded the bus in the mourning and all children being dropped off in the afternoon. Ensure that all children are secured in height/weight appropriate seatbelts or restraints and if other adult are on board ensure there are seatbelts available for their use. Ensure that any behavioral issues do not compromise the safety of the children or the bus driver's ability to safely operate the vehicle. Use age appropriate communication skills with children on the bus. Collaborate with bus driver to ensure that each child is delivered to the care of an authorized responsible adult upon drop off. Ensure that a signature (of authorized adult) and time is reported/documented at the time of drop off. Assist bus driver in emergency situations following all Head Start (Federal), Tribal and State regulations as they pertain to school bus safety. Assist bus driver with filling out accurate accident/incident reports for program reporting and documentation. Maintenance and Communication: Assist driver with keeping the bus clean at all times and the aisle ways clear for safe access to emergency exits. Responsible for a walk through of bus, checking for sleeping children, or items left behind after each route. Assist driver with periodic passenger evacuation drills in full compliance with all state and federal requirements. Assist driver with bus safety and public school transportation policies and procedures training for parents of children who are transitioning to public school. Assist with communication literature between school and home by making sure parents receive flyers, memos, etc. Exhibit professional courteous behavior in all interactions with children, parents, school officials, and the community Maintain confidentiality in all record keeping and reporting. Attend all monthly staff meetings and management team meetings. Responsible for keeping current on all Head Start Performance Standards, Head Start Policies and Procedures and Tribal Personnel Policies. Perform other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High School Diploma or Equivalent Maintain First Aid and CPR certification and a clean driving record while employed by Nisqually Tribe Head Start. Must pass a State and National (FBI) criminal history background check, driving background check, urine analysis test stating you are drug free, and if hired, submit to random drug testing throughout your driving career with Nisqually Tribe Head Start, paid for by the Tribe. Abide by all confidentiality policies and agreements. Familiar with Head Start Performance Standards, or working towards learning them. Experience that demonstrates knowledge and sensitivity to the variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds of the families and children being served. Must pass a physical exam stating clear of communicable diseases. Willing to work non-traditional work hours/days on occasion. Must have a valid Washington State driver`s license and be insurable under the Nisqually Indian Tribe`s insurance policy.
