Summary: The Parks and Recreation Maintenance Worker directly reports to the Parks Crew Leader. Over the course of the day the Maintenance Worker will assist in all of the maintenance of the parks, athletic fields, recreation areas, ponds and landscaping for various areas of the city. Special tasks such as event setup and cleanup or emergency situation response such as weather hazard prevention may be part of the duties of the Maintenance Worker as well. Other tasks may be assigned by the Leader and Superintendent. The intent of this position description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbent(s) in this position. Incumbent(s) duties may include, but are not limited to the following. Essential Job Duties: Maintain City parks, recreation areas, ponds, landscaping, rights-of-way by mowing grounds, weed eating, edging, removing trash and debris, tilling, planting flowers and shrubs, caring for trees etc. Maintain City athletic fields by coordinating work projects, preparing fields for use, including raking and drying out fields, ensuring safety of fields, including lip repair, grading, leveling and ground/sod repair, installing new fields and turf, marking, laying sod, and irrigation. Assists with special events and emergency situations by setting up and breaking down special event equipment, cleaning and preparing special event locations, administering de-icier to sidewalks, cleaning up after high water events, removing fallen tree limbs and providing other forms of assistance as requested. Operate ground maintenance equipment including mowers, leaf blowers, rakes, shovels and other power hand tools. May operate heavy, complex equipment such as ditching machine, box blade loader, roller, front loader, large backhoe, etc. Perform ground maintenance, i.e., mowing, weed eating, edging, blowing, pruning, planting, trimming, sodding. Perform regular and preventive maintenance, and repairs on equipment. Install, maintain, repair and program irrigation systems. Drag baseball fields, set base stakes, and mark fields for ball games. Perform painting, cleaning, maintenance and repair on municipal property, structures, and facilities, i.e., playground equipment, fences, buildings. Utilize various manual, gas, and hand held electrical tools and equipment in maintaining, installing or repairing playground equipment, fences, or related structures, i.e., saws, welders, drills, hammers, shovels. Other Important Duties: Perform related work and duties as directed or assigned. Be able to work weekends, holidays, and extended hours. Required Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of park and recreational facility maintenance, repair, and construction methods and practices. Knowledge of occupational safety and health rules, regulations, practices and procedures. Effective oral and written communication skills. Requires the ability to coordinate, manage and execute multiple tasks. Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions. Thorough knowledge of the tools and equipment used in the maintenance of lawns, trees, shrubbery, flower beds and other horticulture. Skill in planning and coordinating work site activities. Thorough knowledge of the maintenance requirements of assigned equipment. Preferred Education, Experience, and Certifications: High school diploma or GED equivalent Must have a Texas Class C driver's license. Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements: May be subject to exposure to extreme weather conditions (rain, cold), hazardous chemicals, fumes, air and water borne pathogens. Some tasks require exposure to dust and pollen. May be subject to climbing, bending, reaching, kneeling, digging, loading, unloading, transporting, lifting and carrying such as retrieving or replacing materials, tools, equipment and landscaping. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Some tasks involve frequent walking, standing; and/or the operation of vehicles, office, shop, or hand tools in which manipulative skills and hand-eye coordination are important ingredients of safe and/or productive operations. Equipment and Tools Utilized: Knowledge equipment used in maintenance duties for parks and recreation facilities. Safety equipment to properly maintain league and program safety. Various hand tools used to complete and repair playground equipment, structures and fences. Various heavy equipment such as ditching machines, backhoes, front loader and rollers.
