Controls Engineer

Summary of Position: In this position you will be responsible for controls development including controls design, bills of materials, component sizing and selection, panel layout, PLC programming, HMI configuration, drive commissioning, technical support, training, and start-up. Many projects will be designed from the ground up while others may be based upon previous builds. Being at ease interacting with the customer and clearly communicating technical details is vital. Typically, work is completed at MCC, Livonia, MI with some support and startup at customer facilities and occasional out-of-town travel. Overnight Travel: Less than 10% has been typical. Responsibilities: Control Design : Complete controls design and bills of materials accurately and efficiently, per customer specifications. Maintain current knowledge of drawing standards, control components, applications, and standards including but not limited to: NFPA, UL 508, NEC, IEC and CE as they relate to control panel design and build and machine wiring. Backup jobs to the server regularly. Programming, Configuration and Debug : Program PLC's in ladder logic and other IEC-1131-3 formats, configure control components, design screens and configure HMI's, commission drives and networks. Startup panels and systems: troubleshoot after build; make in-field alterations and corrections. Tasks may also include technical support of automation products sold by the company. Interactions and Reporting : Work with vendors, purchasing, customers, shop workers, and sales force to specify, design and build automation solutions and provide oversight, technical support and training. When assigned, create and manage a project schedule: estimating hours / task, committing to target dates, and meeting deadlines. When assigned, meet vendor product knowledge, reporting and training requirements through successful completion of factory and online training. Report activities to management regularly. When assigned, train staff and customers on technical aspects of automation equipment offered by the company. Core Requirements: Bachelor's degree, Electrical Engineering or related field. Two or more years of relevant controls design experience (AutoCAD-proficient). Two or more years of Rockwell and/or Siemens PLC programming experience. Proficiency understanding and creating panel layout and electrical control, pneumatic and hydraulic drawings. Ability to read and understand mechanical drawings. Excellent computer skills, proficient with Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, Teams and Outlook . Strong organizational skills. Ability to interact with customers and communicate technical concepts effectively. Self-motivated with the ability to work well independently and on a team. In-state travel is required, primarily in southeast Michigan. Out-of-state travel is required occasionally. If requested, must maintain a valid passport. Desirable Background and Abilities: Experience using E-Plan for panel design. Working knowledge of robotic programming. Drive sizing, tuning and configuration, and/or motion and servo experience. Project or customer management experience. Demonstrated ability to prioritize a variety of competing tasks. Exhibits professional demeanor under stress. Excellent recall, an eye for detail. Demonstrated mechanical aptitude.
