Duties Child Advocates serve as the victims primary point of contact from a case's inception through the conclusion of trial. You will be the liaisons between families and prosecuting attorneys. Responsibilities · Complete a 40-hour agency provided training within first two weeks of employment· Provide trauma-informed direct services to families of abused children including support, advocacy, crisis intervention, safety planning, information, and referrals on the helpline, with drop-ins at OPDA main office· Take appropriate steps to deal with emergency situations with the goal of maintaining the safety of all clients· Know and understand all community resources the Greater New Orleans area to make appropriate referrals· Participate in weekly multi-disciplinary team meetings to discuss cases· Know and understand the process of applying for and obtaining Civil and Criminal Protective Orders and filing them with the Louisiana Protective Order Registry (LPOR), LAVNS registration, CVR applications, reports and follow up proceedings with DCFS· Provide explanation and notification of court proceedings· Serve to prepare the victim/witness for court proceedings and testimony when needed, and attend any court sessions as required including scheduling with expert medical personnel at the CARE Center and Children's Advocacy Center (CAC)· Coordinate developmentally-appropriate meetings with the child, their family, and the prosecuting attorney to determine facts of the case, prepare testimony, and discuss plea negotiations· Document all client contact and enter it into the client records database in a timely manner Required: Masters in Education or a Social Sciences field Working knowledge of child development the criminal justice system. A commitment to the mission, vision and values of the organization A minimum of three years providing direct service to children under age 12 Knowledge of laws surrounding prosecution of child abuse cases Ability to work with diverse populations and child protective agencies Ability to interact sensitively with traumatized populations and to handle crisis appropriately SALARY AND BENEFITS: Salary commensurate with experience.
