Reports to Top Management: Chief Scientific Officer/Chief Operating Officer Job Summary Senior Scientist, Biology, with experience with nanoparticle systems and a working knowledge of their synthesis, characterization, cell and animal transfection properties. Expected to work with other team members in research and development to create novel biopolymers based on polyoxazoline (POZ) chemistry that can be used in development of nanoparticle technology aimed at a variety of disorders including infectious disease (vaccines), gene editing, gene therapy and cancer immunotherapy. Duties and Responsibilities The Senior Scientist provides scientific direction, strategy, and leadership for product development activities on Polymeric and Lipid Nanoparticle technology. Will design robust and effective experimentation, development of novel characterization tools, data analysis and interpretation. Will layout, review and execute project plans supported by strong scientific rationales and technical approaches and will be an effective communicator. Responsible for strategic leadership and advice on effective evaluation and characterization of novel formulations/processes and components, delivery technologies and analytical tools in support of therapeutic modalities including (but not limited to) RNA-based therapeutics and nanoparticle modalities. As lead scientist must be able to work independently, but closely with the current polymer chemists to develop and characterize polyoxazoline (POZ) as a polymer capable of building polymeric nanoparticles and lipid nanoparticle-based (LNP) delivery platforms for diverse therapeutic applications. Will be aware of project priorities, deliverables (e.g., memos, reports) and timelines. Will demonstrate scientific excellence through reports, publications and patents. Will be proactive in generating IP and related documentation and collaborate with Serina's legal teams. Will effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams outside of Serina (strategic partners) to coordinate the product development and characterization of POZ Polymeric and LNP formulations. Will participate in scientific conferences and forums to gain information about novel technologies with focus on RNA-based therapeutics Minimum Qualification Requirements A minimum of a Ph.D. in Biology, Biochemistry, Pharmaceutics, Biotechnology, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field with postdoctoral experience in industry or academia. A Masters/Bachelors level applicant with 10+ years of relevant experience will also be considered. S trong background in Lipid Nanoparticle-based (LNP) product development, characterization and application in various cell-based assays with translational advancement to animal studies. Advanced knowledge in polymer chemistry and oligonucleotides product development including understanding of formulation, process and characterization fundamentals (Lipids, RNA, DNA, other) through publications of peer-reviewed research. Will be experienced in product development projects and possess an in-depth understanding of CMC requirements relevant to nucleic acid-based LNP drug development. Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral) and the ability to organize, participate and lead in a team environment. Experience in writing scientific documents is an essential component of this position. Individual must be fully trained in sterile technique and general lab procedures. Must know how to use the latest instrumentation to make and test polymer and LNP compositions. Experience with working and setting up tissue culture experiments with different cell lines, to understand in-vitro transfection and viability properties. Is highly desirable. Will have demonstrated project leadership and industry knowledge. Proven ability to think creatively and obtain solutions to complex and diverse problems. Proven record of creative, productive, and insightful analysis and achievement. Must be self-motivated and able to work under time restraints. Serina Therapeutics, Inc. Serina Therapeutics is a polymer therapeutics company located at the Hudson-Alpha Institute of Biotechnology in Huntsville, AL. The platform technology is based on a water-soluble polymer called poly(oxazoline), POZ for short. The platform is clinically validated and includes a pipeline of small molecule conjugates aimed primarily at CNS disorders. In 2020, Serina initiated studies on development of lipid nanoparticles (LNP) for the replacement of the commonly employed immunogenic PEG-lipid to create novel LNPs. The distinguishing features of this new application have now been characterized by Serina's own internal efforts and those of large pharma partnerships. This new initiative helped lead Serina to its first institutional financing and positions Serina for a potential going-public transaction in mid-2023. Serina is now seeking a Senior Scientist, Biology R&D to help lead Serina's efforts in scientific, pre-clinical and clinical development of treatments using POZ-LNP technology. Work Environment and Physical Demands Laboratory conditions that include the use of chemicals and the generation of product and waste. Low levels of noise and odor are anticipated. Minimal physical demands on the job include sitting, standing, walking and inspection of chemical laboratory and manufacturing areas. Minimal amount of lifting (up to 30 lbs).
