Isidore Newman School seeks a talented and dynamic Lower School Learning Specialist for the 2023-2024 academic year. The role of the Learning Specialist in the Lower School is multifaceted. Serving equally as a resource for students, parents and teachers, the position involves communication, collaboration, case management and instructional support/coaching. The Lower School Learning Specialist reports to the Head of Lower School. The successful candidate will possess excellent speaking, writing, and interpersonal skills; be successful in working with teams; possess significant knowledge of learning disabilities and strategies of support; the ability to interpret test results of IQ, achievement and diagnostic tests, knowledge of legal standards in compliance with state and federal statutes and regulations, and genuinely love to work with students and educators at the elementary school level. The most important qualifications include: A bachelor's degree or higher in special education, counseling, psychology or a related field. Master's degree preferred. Training and/or established expertise in the area of learning disabilities and attentional difficulties. Practical knowledge of how to work with a wide range of different learners in elementary and early elementary grades. Demonstrated patience, perseverance, and kindness in working with students, parents, faculty, and staff as well as a highly collaborative professional style. Cultural competency demonstrating respect for diversity of identities and experiences and an orientation toward equity and inclusion. Proven record keeping skills and knowledge of legal standards in compliance with state and federal statutes and regulations. Understand competing responsibilities to uphold confidentiality in relation to private materials and conversations while providing colleagues and families with the information they need to help the student. Significant responsibilities include: Case Management Coordinate the evaluation process as needed and interpret evaluation reports for classroom use. Maintain student files according to division/grade level. Transition students between divisions as needed. Make recommendations for outside service providers as needed. Act as an advocate for students as needs arise. Collaboration Collaborate with classroom teachers on the design and implementation of academic and behavior interventions as concerns arise. Serve as an active member of the Student Advocacy Committee (SAC) committee for appropriate grade levels. Work with colleagues to develop/implement accommodation plans for students as needed. Collaborate with teachers as needed on the development of lesson plans, rubrics, test formats, teaching strategies, differentiated learning environments, etc. Collaborate with learning specialists in all divisions to ensure continuity of care and unity/standard of services to be provided. Communication Communicate accommodation plans and information regarding individual learner profiles to classroom teachers. Serve as a point-person for, and follow up with parents regarding learning concerns. Serve as a point person for all outside service providers including but not limited to evaluating professionals, tutors, therapists, etc. Communicate attempted interventions and their effects in SAC meetings as needed Instructional Support/Coaching Work directly with students to implement academic/behavior interventions as deemed necessary through collaboration with classroom teachers. Be available to coach classroom teachers on their differentiated instruction practices. Co-teach as needed and determined through collaboration with classroom teachers. Work directly with students to increase self-awareness/self-advocacy skills as deemed necessary through collaboration with classroom teachers. Proctor ERB exams for students with mandated testing accommodations. Interested applicants should submit a cover letter, updated resume and names of three professional references.
