The City of Ojai Recreation Department is now accepting applications for the Aquatics Specialist position. Under direct supervision, assists in the operations of an aquatics facility and coordinates programs at that facility. This position is a temporary, seasonal, part-time position, working up to 999 hours per fiscal year on an hourly basis. Employee may work on weekends, evenings and holidays. CLASSIFICATION CHARACTERISTICS Aquatics Specialist is an entry-level classification in the aquatics job series, responsible for oversight of day-to-day activities at the aquatics facility. Incumbents work independently with minimal guidance. The specialist is distinguished from Aquatics Coordinator by the latter's program-level responsibility for all aquatics issues, including budget, staffing, marketing and general administration. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Duties may include, but are not limited to the following: Coordinates plans, schedules swimming class instructors and lifeguards, and assists with the scheduling of swimming classes. Maintains order and discipline. Prevents unsafe practices and enforces department and pool rules and regulations. Ensures that the facility and equipment are in safe condition and corrects due to safety concerns as needed. Maintains records and reports on facility usage. Supervises the collection and accounting of fees from the public. Maintains good public relations with community groups and the general public. Plans, organizes and conducts regularly scheduled staff trainings. Performs other duties as assigned. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE A combination of education, training and experience equivalent to successful completion of a swim test and four seasons of aquatics experience are required. Must be at least 18 years of age at time of appointment KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Must possess leadership techniques and methods; have skills necessary for planning, organizing and conducting a public aquatics program; accept safety standards for an aquatics program, and basic knowledge of teaching techniques and training. Must be able to work harmoniously and cooperatively with other employees and the public; exercise independent judgment in emergency situations; supervise and execute lifeguarding and swimming instructor skills; and work independently and off-site. PHYSICAL DEMANDS While performing the duties of this position the employee must be capable of hearing and speaking sufficient to exchange information in person and on the telephone; vision in the normal range with or without correction; audio-visual discrimination and perception for making observations; sitting, standing or walking for prolonged periods of time; swimming; kneeling or crouching; occasional lifting up to 50 pounds when responding to emergency situations MENTAL DEMANDS While performing the duties of this activity, the employee is regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; observe and interpret situations; read and interpret data, information and documents; interact with City staff, and different organizations; as well as the general public. WORK ENVIRONMENT The work environment characteristics are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of an aquatics program. The employee works inside and outside in an aquatics facility environment, with seasonal climate and weather conditions; with slippery conditions where water and swimming pool chemicals are frequently encountered and subject to emergency situations. Employee may be exposed to chemicals associated with a swimming pool; exposed to blood and other body fluids with communicable diseases; and to computer screens. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Must possess all of the following certificates at the time of appointment: American Red Cross or American Heart Association CPR-PR (Professional Rescuer). American Red Cross Community First Aid. American Red Cross Lifeguard Training. American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor.
