Description:

The Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) will function as a role model to peers by exhibiting competency in personal recovery and serving as a consumer advocate and recovery educator on adult inpatient units. The CPS will enhance the recovery culture of the hospital environment. History of mental health treatment and at least 12 months of recovery while successfully navigating the mental health system and using recovery tools. Must have received Peer Specialist Certification upon graduation from Certified Peer Specialist Training. Applicants can apply if they have evidence of registration for an upcoming training. Must have a high school diploma or a general equivalence degree (GED) and a history of maintaining at least 12 months of full or part time work or volunteer work within the last 3 years, or obtained at least 24 credit hours of post-secondary education. A Degree in a Human Services or Health Care field is preferred. Peer Specialist must possess: Knowledge of the recovery process and the ability to facilitate recovery using established mental health processes. Knowledge and skill to teach and engage in basic problem solving strategies to support individual recovery. Personal knowledge of some signs and symptoms of mental illness (i.e. auditory and visual hallucinations, aggressive talk and behavior, thoughts of self-harm or harm towards others, isolation) and the ability to assist individuals to consider symptom reduction strategies. Knowledge and skill sufficient to use community resources necessary for independent living and ability to teach those skills to other individuals with severe mental illness. Knowledge of how to establish and facilitate self-help and educational groups by soliciting input from the mental health consumers on their strengths and interests. Strong interpersonal skills to relate effectively with other professionals, individuals and families in treatment, and other staff both within department and other human service agencies. A valid driver's license is preferred, as some driving and/or transportation may be required to participate in meetings and offer community trainings on peer specialist roles in mental health care. Basic computer skills required for documentation and communication. PRN position available.
