Strong numeracy and analytical skills. Good problem-solving and time management skills. Highly organized and detail-oriented. FROM THE DECISION MAKER I have summarized the key points a potential candidate should possess. We are looking for someone who is very strong in financial statements, budgeting and strong excel experience (can create complex files and/or able to follow/correct issues with complex excel files already created, included complex formula’s and macros). The individual should have a good grasp of all aspects of a full charge bookkeeper along with the higher skill sets of a CPA accountant (even if they do not have a CPA license). Should possess excellent attention to detail to prepare and document all workpapers such that any person can access and follow the communication within it. And understands the need to save and maintain all the proper documentation(s) necessary to support the financial statement balances that passes annual Audits and Reviews. The person should exhibit good leadership skills and manage /coordinate office staff, work directly with outside auditors and other 3 rd party business relationships. Should have excellent focus on details and deadlines and able to change directions on notice and still be able to maintain focus on all the main responsibilities. Should be able to prioritize not only their responsibilities but able to direct staff to ensure the needs of the company are being met and who owns the responsibility. Should also have the mindset that there is no level of work, that if needed to be done for whatever reason, has no issue doing. For example there are many times that I need to enter and pay AP invoices, file, prepare 1099s, shred etc). Payroll is outsourced but the should know how all the entries are posted to the Ledgers and have a good understanding of HR issues and able to train people if needed. Should have a strong understanding of Insurance and Taxes (sales tax, capital improvement) to be able to assist, guide or prepare. The person should be able to handle / manage 40 (and continually growing) separate set of books and reconciliation. And while many are very similar each may have unique transactions specific to them. We do have various Investor and NYS regulations that must be met. Of course this will all come with time and we are realistic to the time it takes to learn all that we do. But there should be a time that the individual will be able to handle all the above and anything else independently. Meaning they either know the answer or is capable of doing their own research to get to the right answer. And the individual should also be very strong with Computer skills including understanding the Microsoft Windows operating system, Outlook, Word and Excel and know the basics and to a degree some of the more sophisticated levels of creating / working with the files. And is able to write clear, complete and understandable emails to communicate to others internal and external. Lastly, I am willing to train a person with the right attitude and desire to grow into the position but should still have a majority of what I have listed above. For the right candidate most of the above should already be in their DNA and does not scare them off. If they hesitate to accept the responsibilities we are looking for then that should signal someone that will not succeed in the position. Hopefully, this will provide for you a basis to measure the candidates before sending them to us to consider. We do understand this may limit the number of folks but we are also confident that there are people out there that who will be happy to switch from travelling far or may have other personal reasons to work for a good, financially stable company. duties: The staff accountant's responsibilities include maintaining financial records and reports, performing account reconciliations, assisting with budget and close processes, conducting internal audits, and maintaining accounts payable documentation. You will also be assisting the CFO/Controller as needed and respond to information requests by management and for auditing purposes. To be successful as staff accountant, you should be able to accurately maintain a general ledger and ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). An outstanding staff accountant should also have excellent communication, organizational, Excel and analytical skills. Responsibilities: Maintaining financial reports, records, and general ledger accounts. Preparing journal entries, analyses, and account reconciliations and assisting with monthly close processes. Contributing to the development and review of annual operating budgets and performance projections. Maintaining documentation for accounts payable, purchasing, and treasury and conducting internal audits. Performing monthly balance sheet reconciliations. Meeting processing and reporting deadlines. Responding to information requests, reviewing financial statements, and assisting with audits. Ensuring compliance with GAAP. Assisting the accounting manager as needed.
