SUMMARY Reporting directly to the President and CEO, the Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) is a senior-level position that leads the visioning and strategy for audience development, marketing, public relations, strategic communications, and digital media strategy for the Michigan Science Center.The CMO is responsible for directly overseeing the day-to-day management of the marketing division, brand, web presence, social media, and the overall marketing mix of the organization.Reservations, group sales, and events management are also under the supervision of this position. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Leadership and Strategy Leads the marketing, public relations, and communications strategy for the organization Participates in strategic planning, budget planning, and organizational development Serves on the executive leadership and special projects teams Works closely with the Chief Development Officer (CDO) to promote philanthropic support Connects, convenes, and collaborates with strategic partners and focus communities Represents the marketing and public relations functions with national organizations Participates in cultural district museum networks and business communities Cultivates relationships with other CMOs at similar institutions Acts as a marketing and public relations liaison to the board Brand Awareness and Management Serves as the organization's brand champion Helps to effectively position the CEO as the organization's chief brand ambassador Elevates and enhances the organization's brand through effective value proposition design Works to expand the brand's reach and influence through brand equity marketing Maintains the organization's brand manual, style guide, narrative, essence, and voice Presents at conferences and convenings to amplify brand awareness of the organization Audience Research & Evaluation and New Audience Development Leads the process of audience definition, segmentation, and targeting Administrates focus groups and listening sessions Performs competitive analysis of comparable organizations and venues Performs market research, pricing studies, product marketing, and competitive analyses Works to map avenues of new audience development Stays current on market trends and other drivers of change Monitors audience feedback surveys, net promoter scores, and visitor satisfaction Oversees the process of data collection, analysis, and reporting of information for institutional success metrics (visitor satisfaction, net promoter, secret shopper, mission impact, etc.) Marketing and Advertising Strategy Develops marketing strategies to support the organization's multi-year strategic plan Ensures that the organization's value propositions are distributed across channels Designs and coordinates promotional campaigns across value streams Leads competitive strategy and creates value innovation frameworks Oversees seasonal and day-to-day coordination, operations, and implementation Impacts revenue by working to increase annual visitation Designs membership campaigns in partnership with the Development division Designs sales strategies for school field trips, organized youth, and tour groups Oversees new business development, product development, and distribution channels Creates new experiential marketing events and programs Supports internal marketing of theaters, learning programs, food service, and store Ensures customer service strategies are implemented and standards are met Promotes and positions new exhibitions and pop-ups in the special exhibition hall Promotes externally the onsite theater venues such as Planetarium, IMAX Dome, Science Stage, DTE Energy Sparks Theater, Smithsonian Spark!Lab, etc. Public Relations and Community Connections Serves as a high-level representative of the organization on camera and radio for local and national news media, as well as online social media platforms as needed or requested Serves on the crisis management team, updates and manages the crisis communication plan Cultivates relationships with national organizations such as ASTC, AAM, and IAAPA Digital and Social Media Management Leads the organization's high-level digital strategy Directs the design of the website and ensures optimal use of its functions Oversees and monitors the organization's various social media sites Events Management and Community Free Days Supervises events management functions and associated staff for revenue and non-revenue events, programs, meetings, and activities. Helps generate new business for rentals and large-scale event hosting Helps secure and administrate promotions and sponsorship of community free days Non-profit Business Management Manages the overall workload of the department, tracking all projects and the roles of departmental staff on each project Leads the annual planning and budgeting process for associated departments within the marketing and public relations functions Performs periodic risk assessments for new and existing programs Professional Development, Training, and Coaching Serves as a leadership coach for direct reports Champions learning initiatives and promotes effective knowledge management strategies Remains current on best practices in audience research, surveys and evaluation, marketing, public relations, digital and social media, community engagement, nonprofit leadership. Initiatives and Special Projects Supports board members leading CMO relevant board-level initiatives Serves as overall project manager for marketing, public relations, and communications Oversees all aspects of marketing and promotion of special exhibitions and grant-funded/sponsored projects Perform other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must be proficient in using office productivity, project management applications, and cloud-based solutions. Must be able to effectively lead strategy, planning, and collaboration meetings. Must have excellent interpersonal skills for interacting with visitors/guests, communities, and co-workers. Must be well organized, flexible, and capable of balancing multiple projects simultaneously and effectively. Familiarity withGoogle Analytics and AdSense, WordPress, MailChimp, ConstantContact, SurveyMonkey and similar tools. Demonstrated project management leadership and process skills and experience. Capable of leading diverse teams of individuals and skills both in-house and with external consulting partners, contractors, and/or agencies. Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a polished professional demeanor, executive presence, and a persuasive and/or influential manner. EXPERIENCE 7-10 years of relevant leadership/supervisory experience5-7 years at the senior management or executive level5-7 years leading a comprehensive marketing and communications plan to advance an organization's mission and goals5-7 years strong financial management skills.3-5 years experience leading strategic planning and business strategy3-5 years experience in survey research and evaluation EDUCATION M.A., M.S., MBA in marketing, public relations, business management or related field (preferred)B.A., B.S. from an accredited four-year college or university (required) CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS No formal certificates, licenses, or registrations required, but should be very familiar with the tools and techniques of non-profit business management and project management. PHYSICAL DEMANDS No specific physical demands required. WORK ENVIRONMENT Primarily works in an office environment with a Monday - Friday work schedule. Weekend work is required for special events and programs primarily concerning news media and promotions.Occasional direct supervision and facilitation on the floor during daily operations, special events, fundraisers, and programs as required.
