Position Summary: William & Mary Information Technology is a service-based organization, first and foremost. We seek qualified applicants for the position of Research Computing (RC) Network and Data Specialist to be responsible for day-to-day operations, maintenance and hardware support for all networking and file-systems serving RC systems.Systems include Linux-based clusters, departmental servers, and workstations under the control of RC. Network types include Ethernet, Infiniband, and Fibre Channel. File-systems utilize NFS, SMB/CIFS, and Lustre.Primary responsibilities include (but not limited to): Hardware installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and replacement of networking and file-systems in: RC’s Linux based clusters, RC group desktops and all other RC file-servers and networking hardware. Monitoring RC networks and file-systems for correct performance and effective use. Work with W&M/VIMS researchers to troubleshoot use of RC systems related to data use/ingestion and transfer speeds. Document procedures involved in the above tasks. Required Qualifications: EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent combination of education, training and or experience COMPETENCIES: • Superior knowledge of Linux/Unix, working knowledge of Mac/OSX and Windows OS • Demonstrated skills in administering networking and file-systems infrastructure. Knowledge of best practices for such systems • Knowledge about testing and benchmarking computer networks and file-systems • Working knowledge of major networking types, including Ethernet, Infinband, and Fibre Channel. • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple and competing priorities in a complex, rapidly changing environment.EXPERIENCE:Hands on experience and or expertise in deploying, operating and administering computer networks and file-systems. Preferred Qualifications: EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a directly related field is highly preferred.COMPETENCIES: • Demonstrated programming and scripting skills (tcsh, bash, Python, C, C++, Java, etc.)EXPERIENCE: • Experience with NFS, SMB, CIFS and parallel file-system such as Lustre and/or GPFS. • Experience with Level 2/3 switching and knowledge of common networking protocols. Experience with administration of Linux, Windows and Mac servers/desktops. Conditions of Employment: This position is subject to additional hours beyond the typical work day/week to include weekends and holidays. May require occasional overnight travel.
