Currently, we are one of only a handful of departments in the State of Maine that has been nationally accredited by the Commission of Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA).South Portland Police Department is the 4th largest municipal department in the State of Maine. Answering approximately 36,000 calls for service per year, the department offers excellent training, as well as opportunities for specialization or career advancement, to include K-9 Officer, Detective, Task Force Investigators (MDEA / FBI Safe Streets / Computer Crimes), Evidence Technician, Community Response Officer, Field Training Officer, SWAT Operator, Crisis Negotiator, Police Diver, School Resource Officer, Polygraph Operator, and promotional advancement.The position offers a comprehensive benefits package, including competitive wages, step and COLA increases, substantial overtime opportunities, and added financial stipends for post-secondary education, physical fitness level, EMT and Academy licensure, and collateral assignments. Paid health insurance, vision and dental plans, paid time off, education tuition reimbursement, annual clothing allowance, and excellent retirement options that include a pension ensuring a benefit of at least 66% of final average top salary, a Deferred Compensation Plan (457(b)) and Social Security.Requirements:Eligible candidates must be at least 20 years of age at the time of application, hold a valid operator's license, be at least high school graduate or equivalent, be permitted to lawfully work in the United States, and have no disqualifying criminal convictions or conduct.
