About the Summer Intern Program For over fifteen years, the Foundation has hosted summer interns, a program that provides an opportunity for students in various disciplines to learn how a career in philanthropy can make a difference. Interns will have the opportunity to gain meaningful, hands-on work experience and opportunity to apply coursework concepts to real-world work situations over the ten-week program. The program will culminate with a presentation of work.The summer intern cohort will be part of an orientation program to go beyond their assigned projects to learn from our diverse and talented staff how the Foundation aims to solve some of the most pressing health issues in our nation and to provide all the opportunity to live a healthier life.The Foundation seeks students who are curious, motivated, self-directed and have passion for work that supports our mission.Intern projects are listed below. The paid internship program in our Princeton, N.J., office runs for 10 weeks starting in early June. Travel and living accommodations are the responsibility of the intern. Accounting The Accounting Intern will participate in various activities to gain an understanding of non-profit accounting with a focus on tax functions, annual financial statement audit, analysis of financial statements, data collection and benchmarking. Junior or senior majoring in accounting. Candidates should have a basic knowledge of accounting principles, financial statements, be proficient in Excel, and have an interest in non-profit accounting/tax. Health Equity The Health Equity intern will assist in activities to bring together and align the Foundation equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives. Initiatives and programs focus on identifying important health disparities, evaluate and monitor efforts using short- and long-term measures, and reassess strategies in light of process and outcomes and support next steps to create a fair and just opportunity for health and well-being. The intern will be involved in day-to-day activities to support equity work such as developing background information on literature, field direction and stakeholders as well as assist in the preparation of presentations, speeches and written reports and other projects. Interns will have specific projects aligned with the Foundation's work on the President's Council on Disability Inclusion in Philanthropy. Seniors from various majors welcome. Background, experience and/or interest in health as well as Equity, Diversity and Inclusion preferred. Health Systems The Foundation believes that health and health care systems should center on the goals and needs of the people and communities they serve. The Health Systems Intern will work closely with our team to examine specific learning topics of interest in the health system space and will do research, synthesize information, and conduct interviews to produce a report of outcomes that will be used to help support future funding options and plans. Graduate students majoring in public health, public policy (health/health care focus) or other master's level research related to health preferred. Law The Law intern will work closely with a team of in-house lawyers to gain exposure to a range of activities common for in-house counsel in a grant-making tax-exempt organization. The intern will develop guidelines, templates, and resource materials related to grants to support organizations that are serving as a fiscal sponsors for the charitable activities RWJF seeks to fund. The intern will also have the opportunity to assist with the legal aspects of grant review. Law students with at least one year of law school and an interest in representing tax-exempt organizations preferred. Law students with one year of law school. Interest in representing tax-exempt organizations preferred. Non-Profit Management The Non-Profit Finance Management Intern will do finance related projects to gain an understanding of finance and business management in the philanthropy/non-profit sector with exposure to the Foundation's mission and programmatic work. The intern will participate in a variety of day-to-day grantmaking activities including reviewing grant budgets and grant reports, due-diligence reviews and other related activities. The intern will also be assigned a specific process improvement project or data analysis project and will conduct research, develop insights and present recommendations using data visualization tools. Junior, senior or grad student majoring in business, accounting or finance. Knowledge of accounting, budgeting and financial analysis needed. Excel, PowerPoint and data visualization tools helpful. Experience or interest in data storytelling welcome. Pioneering Ideas The Pioneer team at the Foundation investigates novel approaches within and well beyond the field of health, and seeks new relationships and fresh thinking that may accelerate change, or transform the way we think about building a Culture of Health. The team applies methods of strategic foresight to "trend-sense" and funds explorations into emerging trends or cutting edge ideas. The Pioneer intern will be responsible for developing a real-time trend sensing dashboard to extract and visualize insights from trend sensing data and support strategic planning initiatives. Junior, seniors from various disciplines welcome. Experience creating dashboards and data visualizations from different data sets preferred. Policy The Policy Intern will assist staff in their efforts to provide policymakers, congressional staffers, and administration officials with evidence-based, non-partisan material that clearly explains health policy issues. The intern will conduct research and attend meetings and will present findings with a specific focus on coverage, health care costs, and the social determinants of health. Juniors or seniors majoring in business, history, political science, public policy or economics Interest in state government, social determinants of health, and/or insurance preferred. Minimum Requirements Interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships. Proficiency with various technology platforms (Microsoft Office Suite, Google Docs, Dropbox, etc.) Oral, written communication and presentation skills. Writing samples may be requested. Able to interact with staff at all levels. Able to plan and organize work responsibilities, strong time management skills. Attention to detail. Research skills. Able to analyze and present data. Analytic skills. Ability to work independently as well as in highly collaborative team environments. Ability to work in an inclusive environment working as part of a multidisciplinary team and working effectively with persons from diverse cultural, social and ethnic backgrounds.
