The incumbent works collaboratively with other WHS leadership to address health center-wide planning, administrative functions, and clinical operations. The incumbent in this professional medical position performs duties in accordance with established standards and ethics of Medical practice, personal clinical qualifications, and WHS policies and operational procedures.The incumbent in this position will see, hear and possibly have access to confidential information that must be handled in accordance with all relevant state and federal laws and University policies and procedures regarding its use and disclosure. This position is also authorized to review, create and process patient information and/or data in accordance with established procedures in the performance of job duties.WHS utilizes computer technology in all aspects of its operations, including an electronic health record system. The incumbent must become familiar with and be able to use the appropriate computer hardware and software programs associated with this position.The incumbent must become familiar with and adhere to the Watkins Health Services Customer Experience Plan to ensure appropriate interaction and positive outcomes with both internal and external customers.Watkins Health Services is a unit in Student Affairs. Job Description 85% Administrative Responsibilities Serves as a member of the Leadership Team in planning, developing, implementing, directing and evaluating the comprehensive programs, services and activities for Watkins Health Services. Shares administrative call when the Director is unavailable. Serves as an advocate/liaison on patient care issues including but not limited to: the development of clinical policies, procedures, practices, and programs; responding to patient complaints regarding patient care; and serving as spokesperson (or designee) to the community regarding medical or health issues or emergency medical response. In conjunction with other WHS leaders appoints medical staff members to serve as Medical Advisors for the programs and services offered by the health center and personally supervises the anesthesia and surgical programs. Provides supervisory functions including: completion of annual medical staff evaluations, approves medical staff time and leave reports; supervises medical staff scheduling process; observes and assesses medical staff work habits; develops clinical protocols; reviews charts; coordinates in-service education; meets with medical staff members on a regular basis to help resolve work related problems; and collaboratively works with the medical staff to improve their processes and productivity. Provides direct supervision to the Nursing Supervisor for all nursing functions and coordinates interactions between providers and nursing staff. Conducts regular medical staff meetings in an orderly fashion. Promotes and oversees the Medical staff Peer Review process, following established Health Center Policies, procedures, and protocols; maintains a significant role in all Quality Improvement activities. Serve on programs and committees, inside and outside the Health Center, as appropriate and in the best interest of the Health Center and the University community. Coordinates AAAHC accreditation activities for all clinical services for the health center. Coordinates any KU Medical School collaborations, including overseeing any medical school training programs at Watkins, and serving in a faculty position with the Medical School. 15% Medical Responsibilities Provides primary medical care for eligible patients as Medical Director obligations and time permits. Backs up and covers for absent staff physicians, as needed. Prepares and maintains timely and complete electronic medical records. Assists with medical record review and preparation of insurance forms. Obtains consultation and initiates referral to outside facilities when requested by the patient and/or indicated by the nature of course of the patient's illness. Communicates with and educates patients about their medical condition, follow-up care, and preventative measures. Communicates with interested persons at the patient's request and to the extent permissible by the rules of confidentiality. Participates in accredited continuing education to acquire and maintain the professional knowledge and skills needed to carry out the responsibilities of the position. Required Qualifications 1. M.D. or D.O. degree from an accredited medical school and completion of an accredited residency program.2. Licensed to practice medicine in Kansas or eligible to be licensed.3. Current Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) registration or eligible for registration.4. Eligible to obtain Medical Liability Insurance.5. Board certified in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Pediatrics, or Emergency Medicine.6. Current CPR and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certified or within 6 months of hire.7. Minimum of 5 years medical practice experience. Preferred Qualifications 1. Two years of managerial or administrative experience in a medical practice.2. Previous successful supervisory experience.3. Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills.4. Flexibility to meet demanding and spontaneous workload.5. Experience with electronic medical record, quality improvement, and accreditation standards and protocols.6. Demonstrated customer experience skills.7. Demonstrated organizational skills per previous positions and ability to use relevant data to make informed decisions.
