PURPOSE OF POSITION: Under the direction of the Temporary Director of Policy & Public Affairs, lead organizers will use best organizing practices to develop and implement training, work directly with local leaders and members, and coordinate work of temporary project organizers across a specific geographic turf. Within their geographic turf, lead organizers will coordinate organizing work with field staff and local leaders, identify training needs, support temporary project organizers in meeting their goals, develop capacity and infrastructure in buildings, and oversee the day-to-day organizing activities. Lead organizers will work as a team together as well as with the broader campaign team and field staff. MAJOR FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Coordinate all activities of day-to-day political and capacity-building organizing within assigned geographic turf. Utilize data systems to track organizing work. Support accountability of project staff organizers in achieving outreach, organizing, and escalation goals; and achieve those goals for turf assigned to the lead organizer. Recruit Education Minnesota members and staff to participate in worksite engagement, member-to-member and community conversations, worksite and local actions, and infrastructure building related to full-funding and student-centered bargaining. Work as a productive team member and team leader on various staff committees and decision-making groups. Identify potential leaders and activists, coordinate work happening in locals, identify potential opportunities and roadblocks, and ensure teamwork between organizing, electoral, legislative and fieldwork within geographic turf. Communicate with Education Minnesota local leaders and staff to ensure understanding of long-term objectives, next steps, expectations and timelines. Support Education Minnesota professional staff in successfully working with worksite unity teams. Perform duties of project staff organizers with limited turf. Experience in working with confidential and sensitive information and issues. Experience communicating and coordinating work among peers and colleagues, across disciplines or departments, or between constituencies. Willingness to be a part of numbers-based accountability systems and to support colleagues and project staff in achieving specific contact, turnout, and escalation goals. Knowledge and understanding of the legislative process, local contract bargaining, and issue campaigns. Experience and skills in problem solving, conflict resolution, and strategic planning. Ability to work with groups to organize and focus their activities. Ability to be nimble, adapt tactics to fit local needs, and problem-solve with colleagues. Willingness to lead daily turf check-ins, and weekly or more frequent statewide progress and problem-solving check-ins. Ability to work with technology, data and information systems. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: B.A. [OR] Three years grassroots or union organizing experience is required. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience running a successful local union organizing campaign related to collective bargaining, political engagement, a specific local issue, or similar. Experience leading or being a positive participant on staff committees or teams. Experience working with Education Minnesota locals, members, or on legislative or education issues. ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: Willingness to work nights and weekends as needed. Travel required. Able to successfully pass a post offer pre-employment background check.
