# RPM The Student Success Specialist and International Student Advisor provides academic advising and other support services to students. S/he offers students resources for career exploration, interprets career assessments, and helps students to research employment trends. S/he assists with orientation, course selection, course withdrawal, program changes, and teaches students about technology available to them for registration. S/he monitors student educational progress, responds to early alerts, and assists students with identifying and utilizing college and community resources that support retention and degree completion.The Student Success Specialist and International Student Advisor acts as the Primary Designated School Officer for the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System ( SEVIS ). S/he issues I-20 forms to international students and works with other designated school officers to meet the requirements of federal reporting for international students. S/he serves as the Advisor for the International Student Association. This individual performs additional duties as determined by the Director of Student Success and Retention Services. Duties/Functions Student Success Specialist Duties: Advises students and prospective students on the development of academic and career plans for all academic programs. Utilizes educational planning system to document student advising. Manages an advising caseload of associate in general education students. Assists with retention efforts by responding to early alerts sent by faculty members and working with students who fall in our academic warning, supervision, probation, and suspension category. Listens to student concerns and makes appropriate suggestions and/or take appropriate steps to help the student resolve the problem. Refers students to appropriate campus and community resources as needed. Assists with general orientation of new students. Advises students concerning institutional policies and processes. Provides registration and drop/add services to students. Reviews, interprets and evaluates applicant test scores and other information to determine course placement. Administers and interprets career interest/ability instruments. Assists students and completes forms for changing majors. Prepares and conducts workshops as needed or requested. Serves on institutional committees and attend institutional and student sponsored events as assigned. Performs all duties as assigned by supervisor. Demonstrates and models the Colleges employability skills: adaptability, communication, information processing, problem solving, responsibility and teamwork.International Student Advisor Duties: Maintains student SEVIS records on all F-1 visa status students as required by federal regulations. Initiates I-20s when admissions requirements have been met. Develops, implements, and maintains procedures for recruitment and retention of international students. Provides orientation for international students with an F-1 visa status and serves as the Advisor for the International Student Association. Provides reports concerning international students and federal activities and data as required. Difficult Challenges Assisting students with academic and personal issues that affect the students progression Handling all immigration and Department of Homeland Security information, concerns, and issues for the college. Determining an international students status as issues arise and reporting any F-1 student status changes to SEVIS in the timeframe required by federal regulations. Contacts Daily: students re advising, providing updates regarding status Several times a week: faculty re discussions Several times a week: Admissions re updates, discussions Several times a week: Records/Graduation office re discussions Monthly: other colleges and universities re recruiting, information to/from other international programs where students are transferring in/out Monthly: Department of Homeland Security re reports, updates on students who have become out of status or must be terminated, and must return to their home country Education Required Bachelors degree in social science, counseling, business, or related field from a regionally accredited post-secondary institution. Education Preferred Masters degree in social science, counseling, business, or related field from a regionally accredited post-secondary institution. Experience Required Three years of career advising/guidance experience that includes helping students set academic and career goals. One year experience with international student population, Department of Homeland Security requirements, and SEVIS . Experience Preferred Greater than three years of educational advising/guidance experience that includes helping students set academic and career goals. Greater than one year experience with international student population, Department of Homeland Security requirements, and SEVIS . KSA Required A general knowledge of the community college mission and philosophy. The ability to participate as a team member, to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, faculty, and the general public. Skill in group management and control, the ability to communicate effectively, to understand and interpret school policy, and to readily adjust to change. Exhibited skills in academic advising and educational planning. Ability to work effectively with diverse students. Ability to work independently, as well as in a collaborative team environment, using good judgment, analytical skills, and problem solving skills while upholding college procedures and policies and promoting teamwork within the organization. Basic computer literacy. An extensive knowledge of international student policy, immigration requirements and regulations, & SEVIS . KSA Preferred Exhibited skills in career counseling. Knowledge of academic advising at the community college student level. Knowledge of current and emergent practices in higher education that facilitate student success. Department/Job Specific Requirements Ability to work a flexible schedule as determined by the supervisor to cover the necessary hours. Registration, graduation, and other heavy work periods will require additional hours. Evening and weekend work may be required.The following (compliance) training is required and must be completed within the first 30 days of hire with annual refresher training thereafter: Ethics Safety/Shooter on Campus Personal Information Protection Training ( PIP ) Anti-Discrimination/Harassment & Title IX Other training may be required as determined applicable.
