ABOUT VICTIM ADVOCATES: Screening and Trial Victim Advocates are trained to support victims and survivors of crime. Advocates serve as liaisons between victims and witnesses and the criminal court. The advocate advises the victim as to how the criminal justice system works through its processes. Advocates offer emotional support, victims' rights information, help in finding needed resources, and assistance in filling out crime victim related forms. Advocates are responsible for accompanying victims and their family members to court hearings. Advocates work with other organizations, such as counseling agencies and social service providers, to get help or information for the victims we serve. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES: Ensure that victims/witnesses are treated with dignity, respect, courtesy, and sensitivity and that the rights as provided by Louisiana law are honored and protected. Coordinate with ADAs to identify and assist crime victims/witnesses. Serve to prepare victims/witnesses for court proceedings and attend court hearings. Establish and promote better communication between the juvenile justice system and the victims/witnesses. Inform the victims/witnesses of the rights provided to them by Louisiana Law. Provide the victim/witness correct and timely information regarding the judicial process, case status and case outcome. Provide direct services to victims/witnesses Conduct individual needs assessment. Provide crisis intervention services to victims/witnesses. Provide case management, including referral and follow-up to programs that support crime victims and witnesses, and provide any needed services. Assist client with Crime Victims Reparations (CVR) applications. Assist in the victim's/witness's registration for the Louisiana Automated Victim Notification System (LAVNS), and Department of Corrections (DOC release information). Provide explanation and notification of court proceedings. Coordinate meetings with victims/witnesses and ADAs to determine the following: Facts of the case Whether the victim is requesting restitution Discuss plea negotiations Provide for safety planning and relocation when needed. Complete documentation on all case contacts. Attend regular case review meetings with Chief of Victim Witness Unit. Attend yearly continuing education trainings. Engage in community outreach and educating on crime prevention. Perform other duties as needed Specialty positions within the Victim Witness Unit require the skills and responsibilities listed above and specialized training and skills as follows FELONY DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ADOCATE Ideal candidates should have experience in domestic violence or a trauma related field, bachelors or masters (preferred) in social sciences, and working knowledge of the criminal justice system. DV advocates are required to: Complete a 40 hour agency provided training within first two weeks of employment Provide trauma-informed direct services to victims of domestic abuse including support, advocacy, crisis intervention, safety planning, information and referrals on the helpline, with drop-ins and at the Family Justice Center and/or OPDA main office Take appropriate steps to deal with emergency situations with the goal of maintaining the safety of all clients Know and understand all community resources the Greater New Orleans area to make appropriate referrals Know and understand the process of applying for and obtaining Civil and Criminal Protective Orders and filing them with the Louisiana Protective Order Registry (LPOR), LAVNS registration and CVR applications Provide explanation and notification of court proceedings Serve to prepare the victim/witness for court proceedings and testimony when needed, and attend any court sessions as required. Coordinate meetings with the victim/witness and the prosecuting attorney to determine facts of the case, prepare testimony and discuss plea negotiations Document all client contact and enter it into the client records database in a timely manner DV Advocates must have: In depth k nowledge of family and intimate partner violence related issues based on current evidence based practice Experience working with diverse populations Ability to interact sensitively with traumatized populations and to handle crisis appropriate l y An understanding of the physiological and long term effects of physical and emotional abuse CHILDREN'S ADVOCATE Complete a 40 hour agency provided training within first two weeks of employment and commit to annual training provided by Louisiana Alliance of Children's Advocacy Centers (LACAC) throughout the year Be well-versed in developmentally appropriate education for children of all ages and their caregivers Have experience in trauma-informed direct services to victims of domestic abuse including support, advocacy, crisis intervention, safety planning, information and referrals to all relevant community allies Take appropriate steps to deal with emergency situations with the goal of maintaining the safety children; this includes direct communication with law enforcement and DCFS regularly Know and understand the process of applying for and obtaining Civil and Criminal Protective Orders and filing them with the Louisiana Protective Order Registry (LPOR), LAVNS registration and CVR applications Provide explanation and notification of court proceedings Serve to prepare the victim/witness for court proceedings and testimony when needed, and attend any court sessions as required. Coordinate meetings with the child and non-offending caregiver and the prosecuting attorney to determine facts of the case, prepare testimony and discuss plea negotiations Document all client contact and enter it into the client records database in a timely manner Children's Advocates must have or be able to quickly obtain : In depth knowledge family violence and child abuse laws Clear understand of the roles of the CARE Center, CAC, DCFS, Law Enforcement Ability to interact sensitively with traumatized populations and to handle crisis appropriately An understanding of the physiological and long term effects of physical and emotional abuse on children and their caregivers QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS: Licensed Counselor or Master of Social Work, Psychology, Public Health, or other mental health field (preferred) Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail for orderly recordkeeping and systematic tracking of cases Skills in direct service delivery, public relations, and strategic planning Excellent written and oral communication skills Passion for and understanding of criminal justice reform SALARY AND BENEFITS: Salary commensurate with experience.
