The National Center for Families Learning, a private nonprofit organization located in Louisville, KY, is seeking a Director, Communications to be responsible for developing internal and external communications strategies for broad national impact. The Director works collaboratively across teams to lead the development and execution of NCFL's national communications priorities. The Director also helps manage public relations and public affairs activities aligned with NCFL's mission and strategic priorities. The Director is well-versed in strategic communications and a full range of communications tools and tactics (e.g., branding, effective storytelling, messaging, events, and digital, social and print media). The Director has management expertise, strong writing skills, and exceptional interpersonal, collaboration and communication skills. This position has supervisory responsibilities and will report to the Vice President, Operations & Strategy. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES With guidance from Executive leadership, the Director, Communications: Reimagines and brings a fresh perspective to the communications function . Develops an annual communications plan encompassing strategic communications, messaging and branding in support of NCFL's mission and goals. Utilizes the learnings and recommendations from a recently completed communications audit to create short- and long-term communications strategies for the organization. Implements engaging internal and external communications programs . Effectively communicates NCFL's vision, mission and key messages by identifying necessary tools and appropriate tactics and by driving outstanding execution across all relevant channels of communications - particularly digital media (web, mobile and social). Ensures internal awareness and understanding of external public affairs activities. Elevates NCFL's brand identity. Build on existing assets to enhance NCFL's brand identity to create a compelling, institutional voice that is utilized consistently throughout the organization's written and visual communications. Develops and integrates key messaging. Develops key messaging and creates tools to support staff, board members, and advocates in telling NCFL's story consistently and effectively. Integrates key messaging throughout communication content and revise and refresh as necessary. Supports the President & CEO and other NCFL spokespeople. Guides and supports the President and CEO who serves as the main spokesperson for NCFL. Works similarly with the senior leadership team, program staff, and Board. Works across the organization to create a cadre of communications ambassadors . Cultivates strong working relationships with staff across NCFL. Trains and supports employees in their roles as external ambassadors for NCFL in alignment with key messaging and tactics from the communications strategic plan. Stewards effective communications processes . Evaluates the impact of communications programs on an ongoing basis. Creates internal and external feedback loops that inform the continued success of the communications function in helping NCFL achieve its strategic goals. Supports NCFL's commitment to evaluation and organizational learning by identifying meaningful metrics for communications work, tracking results and reporting on successes and lessons learned. Envisions and helps lead execution of external events and convenings . Helps establish a fresh approach to events such as NCFL's annual Families Learning Conference. Conceptualizes and manage key external events. Manages, motivates, and mentors team . Empowers team members through active communication and thoughtful delegation. Manages expectations and resources to ensure staff goals and activities are challenging, realistic and aligned with the department's strategies and NCFL's priorities. Over time, this position may include additional direct reports. Manages external resources . Identifies and manages relationships with contractors to ensure desired results are achieved on time and within budget. Stays up to date with trends and best practices . Connects regularly with other communicators outside NCFL to learn about trends and best practices in communications. Maintains a public presence . Writes and presents on behalf of NCFL. Represents NCFL at appropriate meetings, conferences, and events as needed. Monitors all communications funds in coordination with the finance department to track actual performance to budget. STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE Actively participates in supervision that is regular, reflective and collaborative in nature. As appropriate, take the initiative to seek supervisory input Accurately identifies areas of mastery and areas targeted for personal growth and development. Seeks assistance and guidance when needed Incorporates constructive direction from supervisor to improve job performance Accepts responsibility for the quality of job performance and makes changes as needed Maintains awareness of current professional information in the fields of activity, undertakes regular and ongoing efforts to maintain competencies in the skills and incorporates new knowledge and skills on the job Shares pertinent information with supervisor/manager about work progress, successes, concerns and other issues that may have an impact on the services intended for families. A commitment to upholding the organization's diversity, equity, and inclusion principles and practices QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS Bachelor's degree in a communications, journalism, or other relevant field; masters preferred Five or more years of experience working in an innovation-oriented communications role in an education-focused nonprofit organization, public sector entity, foundation or other organization. Demonstrated experience driving positive social change through a comprehensive communications strategy is a plus Demonstrated experience in both execution and management in communications. A strong track record working with executive management and board members Experience in the core issues related to NCFL's mission - such as literacy, education, and family-focused programming - is a plus Substantive experience in strategic communications, communications planning, digital media, content creation and media relations, and a proven effectiveness in engaging online audiences Solid understanding of the advantages and drawbacks of new media (i.e., web-based and social media) and how best to convey information in ways that engage and excite constituents Track record of successfully working in a complex environment serving internal clients and external constituents and utilizing their communications strengths to further institutional goals Ability to build relationships and collaborate across the institution, serving as a resource to others and obtaining their input, using persuasiveness, persistence and determination. Exceptional writing, editing and presentation skills with strong attention to detail and a strong focus on a message-oriented, storytelling approach Demonstrated ability to establish strategy, develop work plans, multitask and deliver quality work on time and within budget Strong sense of priorities and objectives and a conscientious approach to problem identification and resolution An unwavering belief that all families want the best for their children and deserve to be treated with respect and dignity PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Prolonged period of sitting at a desk and working at a computer Communicating with others to exchange information The ability to use hands and fingers to manipulate the keyboard including some reaching requiring consistent use of hands and arms Salary Range - $75,000-$85,000 NCFL is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout our organization.
