Located at YMCA Camp Lakeside 1238 Dogwood Dr Lincolnton, GA 30817 This is a seasonal position beginning May 2018 and ending August 2018. POSITION SUMMARY: This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Day Camp Counselor lives with and creates a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while guiding campers throughout their experience and creating a learning environment for campers in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Assist with camper check-in and check-out at your assigned pick-up and drop-off location Assist with safe transportation of campers to and from Camp Lakeside via YMCA bus each day Assist with activities, developing and facilitating curriculum in assigned activity area Assist with interpreting the rules, policies, and traditions of the camp to the camper Assume responsibility for health/welfare of campers entrusted to his/her charge Communicate verbally with campers individually each day Accompany the campers to any of the camp activities Communicate verbally with campers, and provide instructions Have visual ability to recognize hazards in the camp setting and the auditory ability to respond appropriately to those hazards Follow all camp rules and guidelines as indicated in Code of Conduct Observe camper behavior in daily camp life, to respond to health and safety concerns, and to deal appropriately with the improper behavior LEADERSHIP COMPETENCIES: Inclusion Critical Thinking & Decision Making Emotional Maturity QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or GED required or in process, some college preferred Experience working with children, preferably as a leader in a camp setting Experience teaching or advanced knowledge in a designated specialty camp activity area Ability to relate to one's peers as well as children effectively Good character -- positive role model Flexibility and maturity, with ability to accept supervision, and supervise others CPR and First Aid certified, can be obtained WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS Visual and auditory ability to observe and to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency situation. Ability to lead and interact in group activities and perform related physical skills. Ability to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, or crouch. Ability to climb, push, and pull. Ability to lift and carry objects up to 20 pounds.
